...are you supposed to hit them with the butt of the pistol, or the barrel?

Barrel...just in case a bullet comes flying out of that sucker.

ETA: Glock are crummy for pistol whippin. You'll want to go with a full size Desert Eagle
or something else as big and menacing.

I would say it depends on the weapon used.

Barrel.  Berettas are outstanding for this.

The only other time I used a steel-framed smith 5906. It worked well too.

Be careful of guns with square triggerguards.  They'll cut the heck out of folks.

As me and a friend call it... "Thor's Hammer". You definitely would not want to get hit by the Desert Eagle.

You may want to practice a bit before you put it into action.

I've found the the skull of an alpaca is approximately the same density as a guy in his
late teens to early twenties.

Good luck.

Hit with either

1.) the part right in your hand on the downward (assumed) blow.

2.) the longer part outward from your strike having more "whip", and typically consisting of more metal/weight.

Alex, I'll take "2" for the knockout, please.

i tend to agree. if a revolver has a long enough barrel, the barrel can be used as a handle. it wouldn't make much sense to "tonk" somebody with a soft rubber hogue grip, though a nice, sharp bullseye style front sight ought to un prettify a face pretty well.

eta: i guess it has to do with technique as well. if you want to come straight down on the head "el kabong" style, you'll probably want to use the butt, however, if you want to give someone the mighty pimp hand then i'd say the top or side of the slide or barrel.

I dunno. I figure guns are 'fer shootin'. But, if I had to pick one as a pistol whippin' dee-vice, I reckon I'd go fer the butt end of an old single action. Yup.

I believe the specific technique is to pull the trigger just as the barrel, or slide impacts the subjects head.

This leaves a more lasting effect.

Any time I suspect one of my bitches are holding out on me, I whip 'em with the barrel end of my gold plated Taurus PT 92 I picked up from this pimp who owned a gunstore in Indianapolis.

Sweet, Don is a serious PIMP...

And whoever said a Glock would be shitty for pistol whipping has never looked at the magwell of a Glock...  That SOB would fuck somebodies face right the fuck up.  Imagine razor sharp plastic knives like the CIA letter openers.

We all know rifles are better fighting weapons than pistols,  so who needs to pistol whip someone when you can take your M4gery across their head with this on the end

That's why S&W introduced revolvers with full underlugs.

If you pistol whip someone with the barrel of a revolver not equiped with a full underlug, you risk bending the ejctor rod.

if you are hitting someone with the butt, while holding the barrel, you are asking them to take control of the grip and shoout you

The large frame Merwyn-Hulbert SA and DA revolvers were designed with a "skull-crusher" on the bottom of the pistol grip....
The Remington New Model Army and the 1875 Model were designed with a sail or "skull-splitter" wedge under the barrel.
So, it really depends on the gun.

Whenever i hear of pistol whipping someone, i can  not get the image of Nicholas Cage doing that guy in, in that movie 8mm.  It wa's a PPK if i remember correctly held with the barrel as the handle.  Now that's a "more permanent effect...

My uncle worked for a Texas PD for 30 years.  He told me a story about being called to a domestic violence case in the 70's.  When he showed up, the guy was beating up on his girl, so my uncle whipped out the Colt Police Positive and brought it down (chopping style, holding the grip) on the guy's head.  It bent the trigger-guard such that the gun was not operable.  The guy immediately settled down.

It gets better.   The next officer on the scene stormed into the house, asked where the perp was, and then grabbed the guy and threw him into the wall, with his arm behind his back.  Within a few minutes, the next officer showed up and decided the guy wasn't submissive enough, so he yanked him out of the other officer's hands and threw him down on the ground face first.  Luckily, no more police showed up on that call because the guy was pretty well beat up.

Lesson #1:  Don't strike with the trigger guard
Lesson #2:  Don't beat up on your lady, especially in Texas during the 70's.

edit for spelling

I remember seeing a 1911 on the cover of Guns magazine (or was it Guns and Ammo) that had a pyramid shaped skull crusher built into the mainspring housing.

In Good fellas Ray Liotta used the barrel to hold on to and hit the guy with the butt of the pistol.  Looked pretty effective to me.

Butt end, but I was holding it in the "normal" way, not like backwards like in the movies.

Just raised it up from regular firing position and brought it down.
