In the next year?

Never, it will always be science fiction.

You would have better odds of getting there than these people http://www.space.com/businesstechnology/technology/gct_xprize_030615.html
They are going to lift themselves into space with their chi. Use the Force Luke!

The Rutan's are some hella smart people.  they will do it real soon.  the plane they built to launch their space veichle is pretty cool too.

I really doubt it will be in the United States.  NASA pretty much has a monopoly on space exploration and any private interest in going to outerspace is pretty much regulated away.  When it happens, it will be in a country that does not levy such restrictions on its citizens.

YOU want to have sex with the Jetsons maid? Damn you are wierd.

I could understand if she looked like this:

But not a rolling fridge with a toster for a head...

Ok sure, uh huh, tell that to Burt Rutan. There are 22 official entrants in the X prize and although they come from all over the industrialized world, the largest single group are from the US.

There are actually no restrictions really.

You talking about manned flight? If not call Lockheed Martin or Boeing and tell them you want a bigass rocket to haul your deathray or geosynchronous widget up into orbit. Mention my name and you might get a discount.

I'd be willing to put money on the White Knight/Space Ship One winning the X-prize by the centenial of kitty hawk later this year.

I am hoping that the someone winning the X prize will start a renisance in Astronautics like what happened to transcontinetal flight after Lindburgs flight.

If you're talking passenger/recreation, then I'd say w/in 5 years.  If you're talking commercial, these guys are already up & running.

http://www.sea-launch.com

I believe they are one of the few, if not the only, non-government delivery option.

Very soon.  Russia taking people with enough money up into space is just the first start.  I am sure that there are commercial ventures working with Russia right now to reinvent space travel.  Once commercial interests get involved, you will see spacecraft getting up there faster, cheaper, and better.  It's just a matter of time.  I am very grateful to NASA for what they have done so far...but really, it's time to get a grip, and let other entities get in on the action.

Can you imagine....a huge prison system being set up on mars.....Wow...I bet that THAT would deter most criminals... [:)]

Bob Truax already did it back in '83?,'84?

In the next year.  Besides Rutan's group, there are a couple other groups planning commercial operation in the next year (by commercial, I refer to launching stuff into orbit for profit with a non-government-built launch vehicle, NOT necessarily passenger carrying)
