When do you think a drastic change happened to where the majority of the population embraced liberalism?

Roosevelt years.

The birth yes, but you believe that the majority of the country embraced progressivism back then? I disagree

I think it has just happened within the past decade. It was growing until then but reached a breaking point

There were certainly earilier lefty movements like the Wobblies of the 1920s. However, the big change came with the '60s.

There is a movie that well describes America's descent into progressive Hell. It is called "The Wizard of Oz".

It tells the story of William Jennings Bryan.

Though not elected, just a few short years later, Woodrow Wilson was.

So I will say 1896 was the start.

When its citizens started taking God out of the picture. Slowly eroded away to where we are now.

It started to head that way in the 60's, but most people had too much
pride to be in the FSA at that time. I think it really got rolling in late 70's
and into the 80's.

The US was founded on Liberal ideals.

The Loyalists were Conservatives.

Liberals were good, progressives were bad.

Teddy Roosevelt was shit. Things really started heating up under Woodrow Wilson. By FDR we had virtually no resemblance to the country we once were.

I chose the 90s. The early nineties. That's when a lot of the current crop of congress critters grabbed some power and started going real big government crazy.

It started much earlier but it has gotten really bad over the last 25 years or so.

Except that he's entirely correct. Except that there are no true liberals anymore.

The thing is liberals used to be the small government, individual liberty movement.

The issue isn't that the country went from conservative to liberal, it's that the liberal party went commie and the conservative party never adjusted.

The beginning of the progressive movement, turning point was 1913.

Yeah he's using the traditional definition of liberal instead of what self-proclaimed liberals identify with today

I think that it had to be sometime during Bush 43's term because Clinton never got a majority of the vote.

I talked with my dad a few years ago about when he thought the country changed.

He said that after WWII, things were good and prosperous. No one wanted for anything. Things were plentiful and cheap. Most had what ever they wanted. When the kids of the late 40's- early 50's grew up, they still wanted someone to give them shit like when they were children.

Since mommy and daddy no longer had to, they turned to the .Gov to give them stuff.

Thus began the 60' hippy, give me stuff, someone needs to take care of me generation.

I say it was in the 1960s, as a possibly-Communist reaction to the conservative 40s and 50s.

The don't know that 18th century classical liberalism and modern social liberalism are two VERY different things.

I know the terms have changed over the years, but American politics have always been relatively progressive in one way or another.

One of you is confusing liberal, as in socialist with liberal as in libertarian.

Words mean things.

I don't understand why the American Right allows the Left to redefine words.

Liberalism and Socialism are mutually exclusive. Don't let the Left define your language.

I disagree.

I think it's very relevant to the discussion at hand because the premise of the thread isn't correct.

I don't get it either, our political language is so muddied as to be useless. I actually think it's intentional on both sides.
Link Posted: 12/14/2013 7:33:24 AM EST
You can spew liberal policy crap all you want but it takes politcians to give those policies the money they need to grow and replicate into the beast it has become.
1980 is when the real feeding of the beast began because that is when the real debt started to accumulate.

ok, so to properly answer this question, you need to tell me when the US became a conservative country to begin with.
Link Posted: 12/14/2013 8:11:31 AM EST
LBJ's Great Society and the hippies of the Vietnam era are what sped it up. FDR and Wilson began the change.
