GI Joe rules!

I got one of these for X-mas a long time ago:

Got one of these a few years later:

Link Posted: 9/21/2004 12:26:46 PM EST
I had the hovercraft and the main battle tank
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 12:30:25 PM EST
I loved that stuff.

Ever notice we can plug in OBL and replace Cobra Commander and the story will still flow correctly.

I think the cartoon was ahead of it's time.

Link Posted: 9/21/2004 12:30:48 PM EST
I think I qualified as a spoiled kid. I had both of those and my brother had the hovercraft and the M60 tank. Don't think either of us got the M1 when it came out. We began growing out of GI by that time.
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 12:35:13 PM EST
I was more spoiled. I had the aircraft carrier and the shuttle/spaceship thing... Waited months to get those and them promptly forgot about them
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 12:43:33 PM EST
The best GI Joe set ever was the COBRA SR-71 with the attached shuttle on the back.. that thing was freaking genius.
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 12:45:05 PM EST
I never had GI Joes... always wanted them

I had to make due with Legos.... we couldn't afford them fancy dolls.

Being an only kid at the time I got whatever I wanted when we went to the store, needless to say I accumulated an emense Gi joe and Transformer collection. Damn I wish I still had them!

Y'all must be young'ns!

The "little" (i.e. 3.75") Joes came along just after I outgrew playing with Joes, so I never got into those. I still have all of my 12" Joes & their accessories, and I started collecting Joes again when they resurrected the 12" line. I buy at least one of every one that comes out now in their "realistic" military & historical lines, but not the RAH, Cobra/Venom, etc. lines (although I do get the "Timeless Classic" AT retro sets - those are based on the ones I played with as a kid ).
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 12:51:16 PM EST
Good memories. I really need to dig my hovercraft out of my folks' basement. I loved that thing.
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 12:51:56 PM EST
Had the Sgt. Slaughter one!

The Rattler was the coolest GI Joe Vechile ever!

I had TONS of that stuff:
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 12:59:42 PM EST
I played with the big GI Joes. I got my first Joe in '74 or so. I remember when those littel Joes came out and they were cool as hell. I think I was in 6 or 7th grade and WOULD NOT be caught dead playing with "toys" (even though I wanted to).

After 3 years in practice I started buying vintage and 3 3/4 collections until I had spent probably about $40,000 on that stuff. I had every frick'n Joe a collector could want until I got sick looking at the stuff. I sold it a loss just to get that shit out of my house. The wife was going crazy.

Now I just have real guns laying around

thanks,
Ron

I did have two of the very coolest GI Joe toys though. The Cobra Rattler A10 rippoff and the wonderful Tomahawk copter.

I think I had just about every toy that flew in the Joe arsenal till 1989. I've got this nagging feeling my dad wanted me to be a pilot.

I hate to break it to you guys, but those 6" stuff was crap. Your generation got gipped. The early 70's had the best GI Joes with fuzzy hair and KUNG FU GRIP!!!!!

Not to mention the Talking Commander, Eagle Eye, Bulletman, and Mike Powers "The Atomic Man" - I've got 'em all!

+1 except my parents gave mine away because they took up too much room. I played with them every day though

I like the 12 inch figures, which were very detailed, but the the 3.75 inch figures had so many great vehicles. I'd like to see a scale replica aircraft carrier for the 12 inch figures!

Yep - the "little Joes" had the originals beat HANDS DOWN in the vehicle dept. No contest.

That being said, I've got a SWEET 1:6 scale Hasbro Humvee for my 12" Joes that came out a year or two ago & is accurate to the nth detail - but it cost me almost $100, even discounted through the G.I. Joe Collector's Club!

IIRC, a live-action movie (based on the cartoons/comics) is in the works now.

I just saw a preview for a new animated full-length feature film. You can tell the huge difference using the new technology.
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 1:27:34 PM EST
I jumped off a house once to win a GI Joe with kung fu grip. (or was it the Steve Austin doll with the the 'bionic eye'?)

I spent 4 months in a cast for that one. I WANTED that doll!
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 1:28:37 PM EST
Where is sgt. at?
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 1:31:50 PM EST
I wonder if kids today would even like those toys?
They definitely aren't PC and they may not appeal to kids with attention deficit disorder, because they don't talk, make noise, or light up.
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 1:36:27 PM EST
I played with them until I was 15 or so.

I also had the USS Flagg

Ah, hell...I still play with dolls

That may be what I'm thinking of... but for some reason I thought there was going to be a live-action one (maybe I'm getting it mixed up with the retread of Thunderbirds ).

I have that tank in the third pic.

I bought the new computer generated GI Joe movie on DVD last night at WalMart and haven't had a chance to watch it yet.
I've got a few of the assorted 12" figures. My wife has lately gotten into the 12" figures as well. She's got a few female 12" figures and she's actually searching ebay for more right now.

I dont think so, my friend. The 12"ers had a WORKING submarine, a helicopter with turning blades (which i have in mint condition, unassembled) and more.
BUT... what made the originals so much more better than the little guys was that the originals came with a few basic Joes. Then they sold a ton of various adventure kits. These included different weapons, clothing, equipment, you name it. Such as Return to Spy Island with an M3 grease gun, black hat, tutelneck, pants, raft, dynamite OR Search for the Abominable SNowman, OR Underwater Demolition, etc. These 12"ers allowed a kid to use his imagination for hours on end. You could play different "adventures" with those things all day long. The 6"ers were cheap cast stuff. Very one dimensional.

Ohhhhh yeahhhh... I remember learning all about ordnance loadouts from that; the pylons were interchangeable so you could set it up for air-to-air or close air support or whatever...
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 4:32:23 PM EST
Although after watching some of the cartoons again recently, I am amazed at the homosexual overtones. Half of the Joes were basically in S&M getup.
Link Posted: 9/21/2004 4:32:38 PM EST

The main battle tank that was motorized ROCKED.

That's all I wanted when I was 10 or so. My parents hit every Toys R' US within 100 square miles on my B-Day to get it.

Those were the days.

That's what I get for being a smartass.

delete those links.

I found a pic of a nice set of tits and thought I'd be funny, but if you remote link to it, it gives gay porn.

Sorry ........

I was always pissed that the A-10 looked like a 'bad guys' plane (or vice versa). It also pissed me off that no one could hit the broadside of a barn.

Sadly all my GI Joe's are long gone.
My wife has a mint GI Joe Footlocker, pretty old I think.
It is wood painted green with GI Joe emblem, about 12"X5"X4"
It is very cool.

What do toys like these sell for these days? New in wrap.

Do you remember the shelter half tents from the original 12" figures. Spent hours setting up camps, battle zones etc. ..... I still have the originals BEFORE the fuzzy hair and "kung-fu" grip.....................................

Worth big $$$ to collectors in that condition - especially if it still has the plastic tray insert and/or inside lid sticker/artwork. Just FYI.
