My parents showed me pictures of these non-albino white squirrels from NC. I never knew of such a thing. Strange....why in N.C? Seems that coat would be better suited in the northern snow belt.

I assume you are talking about the ones near Hendersonville....Ive seen them around Etowah country club.

They arent a different species or anything, evidently there was just enough of them to interbreed and keep the "white" gene going.

Theres probably a better reason for it than that, but it makes sense to me.

ETA: Heres a pic

special hybrids to be white so they are easier for kids to shoot during hunting season.

I think Brevard NC is particularly known for them.

There was one near my parents' house in central GA several years ago.  He eventually got run over.

There's a town in Southern Illinois called Olney which is probably only known because of its white squirrels

It's not unusual to see black , white and reddish tinged gray squirrels around here .

Some years there are more whites or blacks , but there are always a few variations

in the oak trees behind my home . The ones I rarely see are real red squirrels .

Princeton University has a population of black squirrels.  There's enough to keep the group going.
