Manufacturer plate, no identifing tags besides the Ford circle thing, interesting weird stuff on the dash... Whats up here?

Extremely thinly veiled test mule?
Link Posted: 9/29/2011 7:20:02 AM EST
Test platform?
Link Posted: 9/29/2011 7:20:25 AM EST
Looks like the Ford engineers are doing some testing of a near-production lab mule.
Link Posted: 9/29/2011 7:22:02 AM EST
"Tier 1" manufacturers go to extreme lengths to safeguard their design before being released... In the case of the fiesta, they've been around for a while (outside of the USA) with their slug car design and nobody really cares because 1. it is a fiesta and 2. it costs 12k.

"Worldwide Proving Ground" makes me think it is a test vehicle or marketing gimmick.

Test vehicle.

They drive a lot of them between here, AZ and Cali.

What is that thing out the back, a tail?
Link Posted: 9/29/2011 7:28:58 AM EST
The consensus seems to be that it's a test mule/platform.

see guage pods.

Test vehicle doesn't necessarily mean they are testing the car. It could be any number of sub systems or accessories or it may not have anything to do with the car at all.

I think it's to tow a little trailer that has an emissions sniffer.

I used to live in Scottsdale and right before the Porsche Boxster came out I would routinely see (10-20 cars)
engineers driving them at least once a week cruising Pima rd all the way up to Carefree...

In NoVa?

They are looking to find out how the hispanics feel about it.

Test Vehicle. It is at Virginia Tech after all...

ETA:

Or it could be in town for any of the career fairs going on. GM brought a corvette, camaro and volt with them. similar plates, no testing materials on the dash though.
Auto companies like to bring cool toys like that.

The Examiner just ran a nice study today.

The Capitol region as a whole is around 18% illegal immigrants, over twice the national average.

Though, they called them "noncitizen residents." Whatever.

It's a cleverly disguised ruse to get you to out yourself in GD. We now know you wear epaulettes and that your nametag is unreadable.

Well it has pillar gauges. Possible test of the new ST turbo model? It was supposed to come later next year I believe.

Thank God a gun forum figured it out.

That's not the kind of thing a normal dude could figure out on their own without asking.

The real question is, why didn't you seize the opportunity to put a babnana in the tailpipe?

Test vehicle. See them here quite a bit and have driven a couple, including the new Cherokee. The box on the dash captures telemetry data and can be used to adjust fuel mixture and numerous other things controlled by the ECU.

BTW, the Fiesta CVT transmission sucks donkey balls.
Link Posted: 9/29/2011 8:59:34 AM EST
look at the rear. a nozzle for CNG or propane?

the box on the dash has a blue thing running into it. almost looks like a o2 sensor. there is that big red knob and if you look at the front it seems to have two hoses running into it, like it is a valve for something.

im guessing maybe propane or CNG fueled vehicle with instruments to adjust the fuel trims.

Not anymore! I guess the VT E85 GM car in the background gave it away.

Here's some more pictures. Cool stuff in the back. If you're in VTburg, its in front of the Mil Bldg.

And I unfortunately don't have any epaulets yet. That comes after I'm not a lowly freshman cadet anymore!

All that work down the drain.

Now we have to start over.

This is a real game changer right here.

First time I went to Detroit(2004) I saw a masked 2005 Ford Mustang coming out of the Dearborn proving grounds.

that front end could be related to the one they're using on the focus that opens/closes depending on speed, temperature, etc to help reduce drag and boost MPG

Nothing confidential about that test vehicle. Any test vehicles with new body styles are completely covered with false panels.

Sticker on center top of the windshield is the tag # used by vehicle control to track who has the car signed out.
Sticker on the rear windshield is the build # of that model variant.
Flange on the exhaust is used to clamp another tube on for exhaust gas analysis
Covered tube next to hitch with the on/off valve is a purge or other connector for the vapor canister line or fuel line.
PVC tube on passenger side roof is temp and air flow sensor.
Big red button on dash is a emergency stop. Trust me, it's very useful when testing new control software that goes awry.
Laptop mount in passenger seat. You don't want a loose PC sitting on a seat while on the track.
Data acquisition system in rear seat.

All OEM's use similar equipment on their prototypes. Nothing to see here.
