I know, I wanted to say firearms, but the greatest invention imho, are nuclear weapons. If we didnt have them, I think ww 2 would have been an even bigger bloodbath. Who knows how many more would have been killed in Japan. What do you think?

Arms are not inventions but extensions and improvements to our upper limbs, hence the name. Animal husbandry reduced the need to be hunters which limits the need of firearms for survival (but its still exciting to hunt and I do). The greatest invention of all time was the electric self-start for automobiles. This development made it possible for a woman to drive as hand-cranking a car was no easy feat. Even the best clothes-washing, water-drawing, corn-fed midwest hause-frau had problems starting a car by hand. Notice its development paralleled women's suffarage? And empowered women to demand prohibition of alcoholic beverage? Which led to the birth of organized crime which needed a fast get-away car which of course was greatly benefitted by the self-starting car? That organized crime also used sub-machine guns which led to their taxation and ultimate control by the Federal government. We have been going downhill ever since.

Can't name just one, here's my top ten list (given about 2minutes of thought) 1) the wheel 2) gunpowder 3) printing press 4) plumbing 5) the long bow 6) electricity 7) the gun 8) penicillin 9) the steam engine 10) the airplane

I gotta also go with the printing press. Gutenberg was da man. Before that, books were so expensive, only the rich could afford them. Thus, there wasn't as much need to be literate, and knowledge had to be spread by word-of-mouth. The first book he mass-produced was the Bible. Once the common man could actually read the Bible for himself, it triggered the Protestant Reformation. The next quantum leap in information sharing didn't happen until the Internet.

I agree. With writing, we can learn from all the people that made mistakes generations before we were born. This allows a more highly developed technology and culture.

All of your answers are good but the greatest invention ever created is the Thermos. It keep Hot things Hot and it keep cold things cold. How does that make it a great invention you might ask to which I would reply... How do it Know? How do it Know!

The incline plane, which spawned the wedge, threads, etc. was probably the first big "invention". Even so, it wasn't invented, it was more likely "discovered", so I suppose that doesn't count. In no particular order how about: Horse harness Water wheels Printing press Steam engines Leyden Jars Von Neumann architecture computers

Nuclear Weapons/Power. The theoretical physics needed are staggering alone, not to mention the dedicated effort needed on a grand scale to mine the ore, enrich it--an enormous process alone--etc. and then turn all of that into a working product. It's likely the greatest single accomplishment ever undertaken by man when you consider the scale of it (maybe going to the moon in second--but that's not an invention really).
