I know this is going to be expensive but I figure someone here knows. I looking to get a camera that takes full frame 720p or better at somewhere between 200 and 1000 fps? I know Sony and Casio make some point and shoots that do high framerates but the resolutiong is terrible. I know you can get scientific cameras that have no objective bell type lens. You have to light your subject many times more than usual. I'm looking for one you can use on a regular sunny day and can autofocus on the fly or manual focus by hand.

Rent a Phantom and/or RED EPIC!

Google takes me to the Casio EX-FH20, but thats 4 years old and I'm sure there's a new cam like it.

High resolution 1000fps will be a $5k or more dedicated highspeed camera.  Look into NAC or Optronis.

Yeah I saw that Casio. The high speed video is shot at 224x56 which is far from 720p resolution.

I've already googled the shit out of the subject. High speed, high fps, overcranked etc. I'm just having a hard time finding anything for sale that shoots at regular hd framerate.

Are you really going to be doing enough of it to warrant buying vs renting?

I'll check those out. What kind of price am I looking at for something in the 200 - 300 fps?

I really hope so. I have an idea that most of GD will go babnanas for.

Plus I haven't had good experiences in the past renting equipment like this.

I have this camera. The 300fps mode is below 720P. It's more like 640x380, definitely not HD.

The best camera out there that shoots HD slo-mo is the Sony FS700. But it'll set you back about $9,000 or so.

Thought the camera was cool, until I saw the ninja chick.

Oh, it's a cool little camera. While not HD, 300 fps video looks pretty awesome. I shot surfers at the beach, seagulls flying around, etc.
I want to take it to the gun range and record the shells ejecting out of an AR in slo-mo.

Do you have any videos on YouTube I can check out?

The Casio Exilims do pretty good, and are full-function, full-featured cameras for video and still, but also have some hispeed capability.  Unfortunately, even the newest latest/greatest of them still only does what my older EXFH100 will do - 720p@30fps, 640x480@120fps, 448x336@240fps, 224x168@480fps, and 224x64@1000fps.

I've done slow-motion analysis of some of my guns with the 1000fps mode, but to use it you need really bright sunlight, or good artifical light, and a tripod, and some time setting up the shot properly, since the image area is so small.

Here's the 1000fps mode:  It's not coming up properly in my preview, so here's the link if the embed doesn't work http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMUxSr-P5zA

Usually these rentals include the cost of an operator/DIT.

Anyway, if you need only up to 300FPS, you can do that at 2k, 200@3k, 150@4, and 120@5k with the RED Epic. Might not be in the buyable category but they're a ton out there for hire with an operator and probably alot easier to work with than a Phantom.

if you are planning on using it for anything other than personal use, skip a step and buy hd capable.

this is the assumed res for anything commercial or the like... showing video of any type in any res under 1080 will make you and or your organization/company look "small" and not in the good way!

try to borrow a lower frame rate camera... in the 200s and see how interpolation suites you to kick it down a notch or two... in some circumstances it will be just fine... more so at a 720 res or the like...

or go with a gopro... at 60 fps it is nowhere near the speed you are talking about, but it is 1080 with a great picture and like stated above, software that can interpolate the speed into a higher speed or slower motion might give you results you are happy with... it is after all only a 300 buck or so experiment that might save you large.

I already have plenty of action cams.  All of mine, like all the current go pros, shoot 1080p@30fps or 720p@60fps.  I find the lower resolution at a higher frame rate looks better than the alternative. Since all my other shooting is at 720p I'm looking for a high speed that shoots that resolution as well or else I'll have to fix it in post.
