I can get killer discounts on training from this place

So let's say you take a "Carpenter" course and pass. Will that and .50 cents get you a job?

They also have a cool gunsmithing course available . . .

I think they are money pits, IMHO.
Do you know anyone who actually graduated and was helped by any of them?

This is all you need to know...

Penn Foster Career School is accredited by the Middle States Commission on Secondary Schools for our high school and vocational-technical programs. Penn Foster Career School is also accredited by the Accrediting Commission of the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC), which is listed by the U.S. Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency. Penn Foster is licensed by the Pennsylvania State Board of Private Licensed Schools.

It is licensed and accredited. However, and this is a BIG caveat, if you are looking for a "real" degree, even via distance/online classes, the undergraduate school MUST be accredited one of the accrediting agencies recognized by the US DOE. Visit their website for more information.

Here are some of the recognized accrediting agencies:

Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools
New England Association of Schools and Colleges
North Central Association of Colleges and Schools
Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities
Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Commission on Colleges
Western Association of Schools and Colleges

I've hired technicians many times...

I've never given a resume' a second look that listed any online school.

Wait, I have hired a couple of IT guys from University of Phoenix, but that's it.

So, you might not even get in the door.
