I'm leaning toward urban and desert camo, but there might be several different types of each.

|
Flecktarn. I think the Desert pattern makes you look like too much of a Gomer and I think the Woodland makes you look like a NG.
I wear black mostly, but also jungle stripe with my flecktarn. |

Not to be confused with WW2 camo. Scroll to bottom of page to view patterns. (everything old is new again...)

I've always liked Tiger Stripe but from what I've read it's not suppose to be that effective, still it looks cool.

French Model 1950-51 camoflage pattern "Lizard pattern" as worn by the French Foreign Legion in Algeria in the early 1960's.
This camo was also popular with US advisors in Vietnam back in the early 60's since they often wore the uniform of their host unit. Vietnam "tiger stripe" camo was derived from the French M-51 pattern. |
|
I like Flectar. In fact, I'm wearing some right now.
I try to wear it everyday. |

By the way, folks, it's flecktarn, or 'spot pattern' camouflage. Wüstentarn is the German desert camouflage uniform. Sometimes the term "Tropentarn" is used about the German desert uniform, but it is in fact the standard 5-colour pattern used for tropical uniforms. i always liekd the look of tiger stripe...cant comment on any functionality of the BDUs in question, just my style preference [:P]
|
|
OD is perhaps the best all-around color and it is my favorite.
|
|
Living in the piney woods of east tx I voted for woodland. 50 miles to the west and I would probably voted for desert.
|
|
Since I got my "irregular" 3-color desert BDUs for $3.97 each and I can't find a thing "irregular" about them I love them.
I like OD and Woodland also. |
|
I prefer the 6 color desert. It's the most useful in the Great Plains area I grew up in. And also the semi-arid moutainous area where I currently live.
But I think Tiger Stripe has the greatest cool factor. Just not very practicle anywhere that I've lived. Woodland works pretty good for the dark timber areas in the local forests. But Tiger Stripe is too dark for that even. Advantage works well for the semi-arid and wooded areas. I use it the most. |

View Quote Yeah, but running around in BDUs in generall is done by all the cool kids [rolleyes] The only BDUs I wear are the pants, and either in solid OD or Tan. Both can be mistaken for trendy "cargo pants" but I think they're more comfortable. |

There was a thread in this forum (or maybe arfcom, I dont remember) that showed an analysis of the various cammo's using night scopes.
Surprisingly, black was no good. Under nightscope, it was clearly deep black and showed outlinte easily. Woodland was fair. But 3-color desert was the best in the dark. 6 color desert was too obvious with the "b/w chips". Other variants of woodland (marpat, tigerstripe, etc) all cam in about midway. In the daylight personal choice would probably rule. But in the dark, avoiding being spotted with nightscopes showed the need for a whole different strategy. |

No particular order-
Bushland camo - great for S. Texas Diamondback camo tiger stripe |
|
Woodland when I am hunting alone up in the pines. Tiger when I am fishing because it looks cool. OD or tan when I am hunting with buddies so they don't think I am a nut.
I want to get some marpat... it looks like very effective camo. |
|
Woodland during green months, and surprisingly, three color desert works very well here in Alabama during the months when everything is dead and brown. I have some MARPAT (Copyright, USMC) but can't see that it's really any more effective than standard woodland or desert. I do love the looks of puzzlement it elicits in the MossyOak Moron crowd, though.
The patterns that are all the rage with the "hunters", Mossy Oak (No)Break Up and (Dis)Advantage are far too dark and detailed and lack the contrast to be truly effective... at distance they turn you into a nice, dark outline/blob that looks totally out of place. SG |

For my playground, Woodland Camo works the best.
I remember one time when I was a teenager, we were playing capture the flag and I was deep in enemy territory. All of a sudden I heard voices from rather close. I crouched down to hide my shape (and my legs because the only other thing I was wearing was tan shorts). Fortunately the long woodland camo jacket went all the way down to my shoes. The two "bad guys" walked right past me (no bull - 3 feet or less) and didn't see anything. I was totally floored. Woodland Camo works for me. I do use Mossy Oak type stuff in the fall though when there is little green, because it works better then. |

AIRPAT!!

Rhodesian for me:

|
Flecktarn, Feldgrau or East German "Ein Strich/Kein Strich". In that order.
|
|
Woodlands is still the best all-round, IMHO, however when I know I'm gonna be hunting in a lot of pines, tiger stripe absolutely kicks ass. When I 'yote hunt in the desert, safariflage works great. I own 1 hat in the newer pattern(s), an Advantage baseball hat. You can keep the stuff.

Is there any truth to the idea that an animal sees differently than a human, and while you may be able to spot your buddy in advantage and not in woodland, that doesn't mean it's not vice versa for an animal?
And how important IS camoflage in hunting? It's a relatively new (last 30 years or so?) idea, to try and hide from your prey. Hunting outfits used to be about utility, not about hiding. Why do we have to hide today? Were the deer dumber 50 years ago? |
|
german flecktarn. I also own a british jacket and dutch pants that have very similar patterns, I think it's their version of woodland.
desert would be good for fields in NY in fall when the golden rod and other weeds die but if you moved into the woods it would suck. one thing I noticed when hunting this fall was that above ground level you see a lot of shades of gray in the tree bark |
|
MARPAT is the best general purpose camo I've ever seen. German Fleck comes pretty darn close...definitely cheaper. The Finnish just came out with a new camo that looks interesting. Basically, a faded digital CANPAT look.
Of the commercial variety, ASAT and Predator get the nod. |
|
Hate woodland because I have to wear it everyday. Kind of partial to tri-color desert wearing it means we're actually working. For personal use I prefer OG 107's.

Quoted: German Fleck View Quote I also like the Austrian mottled and the Swiss. My favorite American is Tiger Stripe. Does anyone offer the French Vietnam Tiger Stripe? |

I also like the German Fleck. I have a full outfit of it, but the pants are a bit short!
