Two things, both at Red Lobster, at different times, and yes, I still eat there--
1) a spoiled oyster (on the half shell). Do NOT order oysters in months with no "R" in them. This one was quickly in-and-back-out of my mouth. 2) a spoiled shrimp (fried/butterflied). This one was truly horrendous, as I had to chew it a bit to discover the nastiness of rotting flesh. Ugh! |

I was in Toronto's Chinatown with a buddy and his girlfriend (who is chinese). She bought this thing at a little shop-looked to me like a pickled rotten egg floating in some fluid-she got him to EAT IT! [shock]
Damn she's a real good looking girl, but that was nasty looking. She later admitted that it basically was a pickled rotten egg-blech. |

"Roast Pork" at a little cafe' in Newark NJ. My Portuguese buddy told me it was good so I tried it. It was very chewy. After a little investigation, they told me it was Pigs ears.
Another time,just up the road, I tried the "chicken" well this one turned out to be rooster (it must have been 50 years old!) in blood sauce. Yuck! There are some other things that I have eaten, that were bad but I won't get into details since this is a family oriented forum. |

Worked in the Marshall Islands back in the 70s. Each ethnic group had a cookshack. I was walking past the Philipino cook shack and smelled something wonderful. It was a kind of greasy meat and rice. Ate a bowel and asked AFTER what it was. Let's just say the 2 or 3 dogs on the island were gone. Moral of the story: DON'T ASK!

My mother used to make liver on a weekly basis. Disgusting stuff. Who ever got the idea that an animals organs, used to cleanse the blood could be good for you is SICK. I would sit at the kitchen table for hours because I refused to eat it and my mother was so stubborn, she wouldn't let me away from the table until I did eat it. It tastes much worse after it's gotten cold.

A dog biscuit. Oh, yeah! One time at USNA they served something called Schalm (sp?) Casserole. All I remember is that it was pink, it looked thoroughly disgusting, and that the entire Brigade of Midshipmen ordered out that night. I had one bit and almost "put it back on the table" as it were... |

My mother used to concoct this horrible dish with rice, chicken, a few assorted veggies and GRAPES!!! Dont know why, but the grapes made it gawd-awful.
Here beef stroganoff (sp?) was pretty heinous too. Other than those two thingys, she is a really good cook. |

Knowing what they were made it a bit difficult to swallow, but fact of the matter is they were actually pretty tastey. Never had them since, but I guess I wouldn't hesitate to order them again... |

Some of the Filipino guys where I used to work brought in some goat meat they'd gotten at one of their uncle's farms. It smelled like the back end of a goat. It tasted like it smelled. Reminds me of a couple of other things I...never mind![;D] edited for 'couthness'. |

Something off a street vendor cart in Izmir, Turkey. It smelled really good. The more I chewed it, the bigger it got! Finally spit it out, hungry dogs wouldn't eat this shit. Later, whilst walking through the marketplace, I noticed what i had tried....sheep intestines on a stick!(with bread) The bread, however, was not too bad. I'm sure Haji washed his hands before making it. (as long as I tell myself that, I feel better)

Haggis. Basically sheep offal cooked in its own stomach. Scots adore this stuff. My ancestors suffered bad taste in food preparation if that's the best they could do. I stomach a few bites at gatherings of the clan. Sometimes I don't think the family is worth it. Gawd that's awful.

When I was in Thule, Greenland th first time, they had "Greenlandic day" at the chow hall. The Iniuits served whale. Now, one thing to keep in mind is how good the food normally is at Thule...really good stuff. All the Danes and Americans were eating hamburgers that day. I tried the whale. Basically a bloody, fatty, gristly meat with a tough skin. Tasted like liver due to the high cooked blood content. Disgusting. The Inuits were eating like it was going out of style or something.

The worst ever as a joke for money was a chili milkshake. Vanilla ice cream and a can of Hormel chili in a blender. It was very very bad. But I made $50. |

Well, let's just say my mother was never much of a cook. There were many dishes ranging from simply nasty to inedible that remained unidentified. I had a friend over for dinner once. He came from a family where you ate everything on your plate, or else... Well I leaned over and quietly told him not to eat one item on his plate - he asked me what it was and I told him I didn't know, but don't eat it. Long story short, he ate it, he puked.
That was the same night we had flat cornbread. No one said anything until in the middle of the meal my mother slaps her hand on the table and exclaims, "That's what I forgot. I forgot to put the cornmeal in the cornbread!" It actually wasn't bad, just odd. But by far the worst thing I have ever eaten was a hard boiled egg that had partially developed. To this day, 12 or 15 years later, I still cannot eat a hard boiled egg without slicing it first to check... |

There was this time I got my cocoa mug mixed up with a mug full of cold bacon grease... my stomach still turns twenty-five years later just thinking about it.
Other than that I guess I've been pretty lucky (read: picky eater). I agree 100% with the guy who hates seafood and eggs (especially greasy fried eggs with the runny yolk). I never could understand why everybody went crazy over crab, lobster, etc... all of it tastes like fish, some fishier than others. |

Well, first of all, you guys gotta stop the squid-bashing....I love the stuff raw, in vinaigrett (with conch), or deep-fried with marinara. Our friend Frank works very hard to supply the stuff, the least we can do is create demand.
Second, Haggis is some good $hit! When I visited Edinburgh last year, the natives were amazed that an American would gobble the stuff up..It tastes like a stew fer gosh sake! But lastly, even with my cast-iron, often-eat-a-pickled-egg-in-a-nasty-saloon-at-3-am stomach, I have to agree with m193, sea urchin (Uni") is the ONE kind of sushi that will make me spew....the sheer nastiness of the taste and texture is indescribable...[puke] |

Here in Korea ....
1) It might have been a sea urchin, or a type of sea cucumber, raw and all grinded up, orange in color. Looked like a plate of puke, and tasted like slime with crunchy warts. Was killin' the Koreans too, which is why they'd take a shot of Soju with each bite! 2) Raw fish, but not nicely cut pieces of tuna like the Japanese do. Looked like they took a fish and tore it up by hand, and put it on a plate. Bones, skin, & meat in a tasty heap [:X*] I'm half Japanese and have eaten my share of raw seafood, but that sh*t messed me up ! [puke] Chris |
