I hear on this board the term "Battle Rifle" used to distinguish FAL's from "Assault Rifles" like the AK or AR.

What is/are the distinguishing factor/s between an "Assault Rifle" and a "Battle Rifle"?

Nope. Cartridge.

An assault rifle uses an intermediate cartridge, that is, one that is between pistol and rifle. The caliber is not important. The AK47 uses a 7.62mm bullet as does an FAL but the cartridges are different sizes.

Good point.

7.62x39 is still .308 caliber. Just not .308 Winchester (7.62NATO).

But that is the only difference?

Assault rifles are generally smaller and lighter than battle rifles intended for shorter range encounters. If you pimp an AR with enough crap they arent so light anymore though.

Assault Rifle cover becomes concealment to a Battle Rifle.
