Not POW movie, but straight up, Prison movie. See poll... A few that I didn't put in the poll: "Birdman of Alcatraz" "Lock Up" "Brubaker" (which I don't think counts, because the protagonist is the warden) "Shawshank Redemption"

Personally, I love "The Longest Yard".

Only seen half of those but "Innocent Man" was pretty damm good. Still not out on DVD yet. Escape was pretty good but lacked the "shanking" action "Innocent Man" had. Hey blood, where's "Blood in Blood Out"?

What about "Canned Heat" or "Ilsa She-Wolf of the SS"?
Link Posted: 7/25/2002 5:08:43 AM EST
Innocent Man was great.

Cool Hand and Shawshank. I think Shawshank was the better movie, but Paul Newman was awesome in Cool Hand.

Agreed. Of all the ones I've seen, that one is the most memorable, though Cool Hand Luke is a classic movie and comes in a close second.

Shawshank Redemption was a very good prison movie.
Link Posted: 7/25/2002 4:44:39 PM EST
Definately one of the most brutal is "American Me". Pretty difficult to watch at times.
Link Posted: 7/25/2002 4:45:31 PM EST
Yup....Shawshank and Midnight Express were two of the best ever.
Link Posted: 7/25/2002 9:19:51 PM EST
What?...you guy's didn't like "Blood in Blood Out"? Shankings galore and a "Tinker Bell" to top it off.

"Bad Boys" and the prison clips in "American History X"
Link Posted: 7/25/2002 10:35:51 PM EST
Most of the best were listed. I still like the classic old war style prison flick... The Great Escape.
Link Posted: 7/26/2002 5:52:40 AM EST
From what I've learned from prison movies, America has a problem with unreasonably cruel wardens managing our prisons.

Sorry, but POW movies don't count. POW movies have none of the key elements: 1. scary convicts who "just got out of the hole". 2. threat of going to "the Hole" 3. shanks. 4. prison rapes 5. guys named "Bull" 6. drama in "the yard" All the great prison movies have these things in common.

Prison movies Shawsank Redemption Short Eyes http://us.imdb.com/Plot?0076706 Obscure prison movie about a a child molester who gets his comeuppance. Seemed pretty realistic and brutal at the time. Papillion Carbine Williams http://us.imdb.com/Plot?0044480. (okay, so not that great but also plays into the gun interest of this forum). It stars Jimmy Stewart in the true story of David Williams who invented and *built* the M-1 Carbine while serving time on a prison work farm). POW movies Bridge Over the River Kwai The Birdmen (made for TV)http://us.imdb.com/Plot?0066833 Pretty ridiculous but entertaining move about POWS who construct a glider in secrecy to fly out of a POW camp on a mountain top (presumably Colditz)to Switzerland... I told you it was ridiculous.

I'd say that "Reform School Girls" counts as one.
