I know surefire makes excellent products. Was looking at the 618LM but for a tiny bit more I could get a surefire X300 ultra and mount it on a surefire MOE forend. This has higher output and just a bit shorter run time.

ETA: I am all for having a light on defensive gun, the question wasn't about that. I'm asking about how would you go about it. Surefire shotgun weapon light VS other options (ie some type of flashlight and forend mount).

If you are using it for home defense or as a tactical shotgun why wouldn't you put a flash light on it?  No brainer.

If you are solely using it for skeet shooting then probably not.

Why else would they make duct tape in camo?

if its a HD shotgun why would you want one without a light

Cheap insurance against some DA with an agenda who would claim you didnt identify your target.

Ive got one on my 870, but not my Ugartechea double bird gun.......

If you ever think you might need to use it in the dark, get a light.

I don't think I would put one on the pump if using a pump action. Otherwise, have at it.

No-brainer.

Whatever is lit up with the light gets blown away when you pull the trigger.

On the 870P in my bedroom?  Yes.

On the Perazzi in my vault?  No.

I've got a light mounted on mine... correction, I *had* a light mounted on mine.  I took it off at some point and never got around to putting it back on.

That's fine, my HD gun is an AR15.  I switched from shotgun to rifle after being convinced by several others on this board...

But if you're using it as an HD weapon, it absolutely should have a light.

My big annoyance is finding a decent IWB holster for a Glock 21 with an X300.  I'd prefer to have a light on any weapon I'm using for self-defense or home-defense.

Fuck I fail. I'm all for putting a light on a defensive gun. I should have reworded it about how would you go about it.

618LM because the egronomics are better.

I use a Surefire clamp on mount that I modified so my TLR-1 would work on it. That's mostly because I like Ithaca 37s and no one makes shit for them.

If I used an 870 I'd just drop the coin on the Surefire forend and be done with it.

If I can throw in my two cents worth please.
I do not know the OP's living situation, whether he is in a house or and apartment, in the city or out in the country. If he lives alone of has a family and kids in the house, so my advice will be generic for the most part.
If you live with others in the house, a shotgun is the wrong choice.
If you live in and apartment, again, very much the wrong choice.

You need to be able to control every projectile you launch, and a scatter gun can throw it where you really don't want to. A slug can go right though and then a wall or two and someone else.
Buck can give you 9 .330 caliber balls at one time, again if one misses, everything you own is riding on it.

A pistol with a tac light is a far better choice IMHO, far more controllable.

Now, If you live in the country or there is lots of room between you and your neighbors and it just you or you and the wife, then okay, a 20 gauge with no#4 shot will do all you need.

As to using a AR, if it's in 9mm or 300 AAC blackout (As long as your using the subsonic 220 grain loads) it can work, but in 223, any barrel length one shot and everyone in the house will have some permanent hearing loss.
Then theres the over penetration issue. If you miss (Or only hit soft tissue) and your not using personal defense softpoints (Ball ammo can go through 7-9 walls), yours, your neighbors house, right into his little girls room. The even if it was a totally righteous shooting, you will have a DA filing reckless endangerment charges....and your neighbor suing you.....and telling all the other about the wantabe Rambo with the big gun......

Now I am sure that there are many here who know all this, but I put this up for those who do not know this.

I will now get off the soap box, and if you want you can flame me if you like.

I wish Magpul would make their forward sling mount for the 870 and 590 with an option for s mall piece of rail.

.223 not as loud as some handgun rounds
noise levels of different calibres
