I think the only one I've sat through is True Grit, which we had to watch after reading the book in 8th grade english class.  It seemed like John Wayne movies weren't shown very much after his time.  It was all Clint Eastwood.

The Great American movie quite possibly could be The Searchers.  I also liked The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, The Cowboys,  and The Shootist.

ETA: Also Rio Bravo, although Dean Martin steals the show and proved he could act.

One of his lesser known films, and also one of his greatest.

Well, I guess I'll be watching either Stagecoach or McLintock!   It looks like those are the only two available on Netflix.

Never mind, I found the rest of them.

Start out with Red River and work your way up to The Shootist. Shouldn't take more than a month or two in your spare time.

I gotta respectfully disagree.  I like JW (don't necessarily love him), but The Searchers did absolutely nothing for me.  In fact, I fell asleep multiple times over the course of several days trying to get through it.

The Cowboys, though, I could watch every week.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance was, to my surprise, a good movie. Even though JW was his typical cowboy type, he was co-star with Gary Cooper who was the opposite. The two played well off each other.

So far I've watched a few of the B&W movies from the 30s (Stagecoach, Westward Ho, and Sante Fe Stampede) and part of Rio Bravo.

I really enjoy the horseback chase scenes in the old black and white ones.  The sunt work was amazing.  The gun shots sounded real as well. It looked like real Apache were used in Stagecoach.
