I know we did have 18 divisions, now we only have have 10. Here are the ones I can think of that were deactivated:

1.) 2nd Armored
2.) 3rd Armored
3.) 5th Infantry (mechanized)
4.) 7th Infantry
5.) 24th Infantry (mechanized)

That's all I can think of right now. What were the other units?

Wasn't the 1st Infantry demobilized? I thought one division "demobilized" and then another division took its name. I can't recall all the details.
Link Posted: 10/2/2004 2:18:13 PM EST
The 3rd ID was moved from Germany to FT. Stewart and the 24th ID was demobed and the 3rd stood up in its place.

9th ID Motorized Ft Lewis Washington

1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th ID's are all still active.

3ID was deactivated in Europe, and 24th was re-flagged as 3ID at the same time. So 24ID was deactivated, while 3ID technically remained active, and redeployed from Europe to US, so to speak.

Here's what I've been able to find

Active:
1st Armored
1st Cavalry
1st Infantry
2nd Infantry
3rd Infantry
4th Infantry
10th Mountain
25th Infantry
82nd Airborne
101st Airmobile

Integrated(I'm assuming active and reserve):
7th Infantry
24th Infantry

Seems like I remember a 4th Armored and 5th Armored at one time and a 6th Light Infantry.

So does this sound right for the "whacked' divisions?
2nd Armored
3rd Armored
4th Armored Oops! Disestablished in 1971.
5th Infantry (Mechanized)
6th Infantry (Light)
7th Infantry (Light)
8th Infantry (Mechanized)
9th Infantry (Motorized)
24th Infantry (Mechanized)

I've talked to people who went to NPGS in Monterrey CA, and they said Fort Ord was pretty much shut down, except for the housing they were living in.

Looks like the 3rd AD was demobilized in 1992, Link

Fort Ord is now the California State University at Monterey Bay.

About 750 acres of Fort Ord, including three housing areas and the post exchange and commissary, was annexed to the Presidio of Monterey. They serve the Defense Language Institute, the Naval Postgraduate School and the Coast Guard station.

Give quick facts about the 7th ID. Ft Ord was their home until 1994. Fort Ord has been "closed".

As for the 24th ID:

1st ID at Ft. Riley Dissolved (leaving one brigade behind at riley)
3rd ID in Germany reflagged as 1st ID
24th ID in Ft. Stewart was reflagged as 3rd ID
24th ID inactivated

same went for the 8th Infantry Division:

1st Armored Division in Germany dissolved
8th ID in Germany was reflagged as 1st Armored Div
8th ID inactivated

and for the 2nd Armored Division :

2nd AD at Fort Hood inactivated in 1991
5th ID at Fort Polk was reflagged as 2nd AD and moved to Fort Hood in 1993
5th ID Inactivated
4th ID at Fort Carson dissolved
2nd AD at Fort Hood was reflagged as 4th ID in 1995
2nd AD Inactivated again.

3rd Armored Div, 6thID, 7thID, and 9thID were all pretty much inactivated outright, although...

1st bde/6thID remained and later became 172d Infantry Brigade, Alaska.

1st bde/9thID remained and became the 199th Infantry Brigade for 2 yrs, until it moved to Polk and was reflagged 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment (L).

177TH Armored Brigade Heavy Separate was deactivated and replaced with the 11Th ACR at Ft Irwin, Ca. Every unit I was ever in has been deactivated, bummer!

7th ID is still around...

It's made up of 3 seperate National Guard Brigades(OK, AR, & OR) & based out of Ft. Carson, CO.

My buddy, "Shawn", is a sniper(remember the pictures I'd post from time to time?) in the 45th Infantry Brigade here in Oklahoma and was deployed to Asscrackastan for 6 months...

He's home now, BTW.

The experienced really changed him...he's a different person these days. More mellow...he said he saw a lot of things he sure didn't want to see, and I can't get him to talk much about what he did over there.

It's not just Divisions that were deactivated. There were Brigades deactivated within Divisions that remained. So the Divisions that were left were smaller. There were also small but important units deactivated. The intelligence branch guys might be able to tell you about some of the special units they lost that hindered us later.

As the draw down hit Germany in the '90s, multi-million dollar facilities were built at units just before they were closed, while units that were not closed had to wait for their new construction projects. If you were getting a new PX, Exchange, or housing, chances were your post/base was going to be closed within a year or even a few months. If you had ratty old facilities, you were going to be around for a while. It made no sense.
