I didn't know that "military-style rifles" were legal for us normal people to own. I figured that we could just own bolt-action rifles and shotguns. I didn't actively think that, I just assumed it. I thought that until about 4 years ago when I kind of accidentally found out I was wrong. Of course I wasted no time buying guns.

When I was a kid I bought the hollywood version of someone getting shot, I thought they dropped like a rock and stayed down.
I also thought a bullet could pick a man up and hurl him 10 feet. People get shot and even as they are dying can still take you with them. If you have to shoot, keep shooting until there is no threat! |

I do remember a brief period after learning to read where I believed most of what I read in gun rags.

that the M16/AR15 didn't fire such a small bullet hahah. I googled and drooled at picutres in gun magazines then when I bought my first AR15 I was stunned at how "small the hole was at the end of the barrel"

I used to think:
.44 Magnum rounds could go through just about anything. +1 AR-15 fired a larger bullet. AR-15 bullets "tumbled" upon leaving the barrel. .45 ACP and 12 ga. made people fly across rooms. AK-47's kicked REAL hard .22 LR was a powerful bullet.

in shows with shot guns they alwas rack the slide and a empyt case eject i thaught the the shot came out of the case then you fired it

I questioned the "need" to have an assault rifle
 As soon as the AWB appeared I figured I rather make the choice while I could even though I would "likely never have bought one otherwise". Assuming that's true, you could say the Libtards were responsible for the creation of one more 2nd amendment zealot shortly afterwards. |

I called magazines "clips" until a few years ago (I grew up as a hunter
 ). My brother, dad and everyone else gives me a dirty look because I correct them everytime now instantly out of habit. "It's a magazine dumbass" Then they  ETA after seeing 20iner's post below: I was confused after '94 when I went to buy some more "Banana Clips" for the 10/22. "What do you mean they are now $50, they were $8 last year  ". Had never even heard of the AWB until then. |

Not much really...
Guns are an obsession in my family. But to this day my old man thinks .45 ACP is stronger than .44 magnum. Here's one of his favorite lines: The 45, at the 10 feet, is the stronger, than the 44, point blank!

I thought (as a child) that bullets were supposed to go through you, and the faster they went through you the quiker you died. And that if you got shot you were dead, no emergency room, just dead

not having any experiance with firearms, one of the first times i was taken to a range, i was given a 45 colt 1911,(to shoot). i picked it up off of the table and pointed it downrange with my arm down, shooting "from the hip"...i had no idea that you were supposed to AIM!! ha ha geez thats how Clint did it in the westerns, Doh

I thought it was easy to make accurate Hollywood-type shots with a handgun ala "hitting a tin can from 25 yards one handed while running".
I thought all AR-15s were full-auto. Hell, I even wrote an editorial in 8th grade supporting Gun Control and the AWB, cause I thought it banned full-autos .I still need to find someone to kick my ass for writing that damn editorial. |

hell, i just saw one of those in a college newspaper written by some idiot journalism major i used to think for some reason that the age limit to purchase a "sporting" rifle was 18, but for an "assault weapon" it was 21, same as for pistols. |

I never thought through the use of sights -- I figured the Hollywood hip-shooting was the way to do it, with the buttstock wedged to your belt it must help with the massive recoil of the M16.
 I also never thought through the actual volume of automatic fire that would be needed to do the action-movie stunt of mowing down a platoon of commies.  First time I went up to the pistol range, I rented a Glock 17. I knew about the way the slide worked, but I thought it was broken when the barrel tipped up!  Speaking of Glocks -- I bought the Die Hard line about ceramic parts content....  |

Same here. I read about the "gas operated" M16 back in the mid-70's in a C.B. Colby book in elementary school. I was around 7-8 years old. I'd bet the Dekalb county schools have burned all the C.B. Colby library books by now. Scott |

I thought there was no reason for us not to be able to own certain weapons. Oh wait...
It blows me away how many people say "Yeah he has an AR-15, or M-14...I don't know if they are legal." So I have to give them the 10 min story on what is and isn't ok. These are people my own age and I wonder "Have you been living under a rock?" Lots of people think that if it looks scary it is illegal. I know a lot of people would like it this way but.... |

When I was 12 or so, I saw a Smith 9mm auto (model 39 probably) at a gun shop, set down in front of the wrong label---the label for a Smith 44 Special revolver. This being the pre-internet days and me not even being able to touch the gun, as a minor, and my dad knowing nothing about guns, I went for about the next year believing Smith and Wesson made a 44 Special auto.

The range at which you can hold the same POA and have your bullet land within a defined verticle distance.
For example, a 50 grain bullet from a .22-250 stays within + or - 2.5" of the POA out to say, 300 yards (An example). Therefore, your Maximum point blank range is 300 yards. As for the thread topic... uh... didn't have any? Grew up reloading, shooting, and hunting. Dad didn't fill me in with heresay, just kept to what he knew. |
