I have a 2003 3/4 Ram truck with a Cummins. What weight oil should I be using?

15w-40, although I ran 10w 5w40 in my Dmax just fine.
ETA: Amsoil sells both a 5W and 15W for diesel applications, so it must have been 5W I was running just fine.

T6 Rotella or Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck.  Both are 5w40.

I always figured the weight was less important than the correct spec for diesel.

I use 15/40 Rotella T or Valvoline Premium Blue (endorsed by Cummins) for dinosaur oil, but you may want to look at synthetics that run lighter for cold weather protection.

Ask the guys in your area on http://turbodieselregister.com/.

I've been a member there for about 10-12 years, a pretty good buncha guys who are into Dodge diesels.

The only oil I use in my Dodge Cummins is Vavoline Premium Blue...IIRC it is 15w40. You can get it by the gallon at your local NAPA auto store.

Also make sure you use a diesel-designated oil. Supposedly oils for gas engines may foam in a diesel engine, which is bad.

This.  Diesels contaminate their oil with fine soot.  Detergents in regular oil will bind to the soot and turn the oil to sludge.

As long as its a CI-4 rated oil and it will normally be SAE30 or 15w40.  Semisynthetic stuff is 5w40.  Then there is the full synthetic in a range of weights and they will work.  With it going into winter, I wouldn't go with anything thicker than 15w40.

Derail..
Kaos,  I haven't been on TDR in forever.  Is Steve still the webmaster over there?

Place i worked at we ran 0w30 syn delo rated for dsl.
Ran it from Nov to May in all dsl's.
But the temps went from -40f to mid 30f range.

Syn 5w40 would work well for you.

What does the owner's manual say? What is printed on the oil cap?

Your answer is there.
