I'm going to make some chili tonight or tomorrow. What kind of healthy bread/chips/carbs should I serve with it?
Link Posted: 2/12/2013 12:18:21 PM EDT
I believe cornbread is what you're looking for
Link Posted: 2/12/2013 12:18:36 PM EDT
Cornbread is healthy, it has corn in it...

Honestly, Some wheat bread goes pretty well with it, all things considered.
Link Posted: 2/12/2013 12:18:41 PM EDT
You could get some whole-wheat flour tortillas (or some of those multi-grain wraps that hipsters use to ruin the good name of sandwiches) and make chili burritos/rolls.

Fritos are healthy, right?

Link Posted: 2/12/2013 12:20:55 PM EDT
Hell with that...

Big honking hunk of homemade sourdough FTMFW (with butter of course).

What isn't healthy about bread? Man made it this far with little more than bread numerous times.

I like chili with Indian Naan bread.

There is really no such thing as "healthy" bread.

Still good though.

So is chili and rice.

Cornbreads pretty good. I don't have a good whole wheat bread recipe but here's my cornbread recipe.

Mix:
½ cup white flour
1 ¾ cup corn meal
¼ cup sugar
¾ teaspoon salt
2 ½ teaspoon baking powder
6 Tablespoon butter
1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs

Heat oven to 400 degrees. Melt 2 T butter in an iron skillet.
Pour batter over butter and bake for 22 – 27 min.

You can make this with oil – it is healthier but not as good. You can decrease the oil/butter to 4 T but again, it is not as good.

Homemade tortillas are the best, but not too healthy (basically lard and flour).

You laugh but I had brownies that were made with beans and they tasted pretty good. I couldn't even tell they were made from beans.

Real Chili or that beanless kind?

The beanless kind get served between a hamburger bun.

The real kind (w/ beans) gets served with jalapeno corn bread.

I see you are from texas.

I think the more approriate question is "What kind of bread goes with speghetti sauce?"

Sourdough.

If you need a spoon for your chili, you did it wrong.

And saltine crackers FTW

Bread is not healthy. No matter what its made of. GM wheat is poison, and GM corn is worse. Good luck finding either that is not GM.
Link Posted: 2/12/2013 12:34:24 PM EDT
Fritos

it has corn in it too!
Link Posted: 2/12/2013 12:34:32 PM EDT
There is no such thing as healthy bread.

There is wheat bread or corn bread, neither is healthy.
Link Posted: 2/12/2013 12:36:44 PM EDT
Whatever you do don't put beans in the bread! It'll be fo time in this place!

This right here is pretty damn good

Of course there's also cornbread, having chili without it just seems wrong

Yup - topped with pico and some cheese. Bread is just filler on the side. <shrug>

Whats your go to, TX approved, chili recipe Zhukov?

Now I need to decide whether to make a batch of deer chili or just go to TCP for lunch...

He starts with canned beans.

Sweet potatoes.

Those dehydrated veggie chips.

You could try to bake bread with coconut flour.

I recently had squash on the side with my chili, it was pretty good.

Awesome Texan chili recipe: http://homesicktexan.blogspot.com/2009/02/more-precise-texas-chili-recipe.html

ETA: I add Mexican oregano and Gebhardt's chili powder to it myself.

Zhukov- did you make the chili for the contest last spring (elk?) ??

Although this is probably a lost cause, the correct word is "healthful", not "healthy". Eating a healthful bread would make one healthy.

I'm concerned about OP.

Chilli needs nothing but cheese or onions or both. I like to chop up some habaneros and toss in on top.

Healthy bread is bread that isn't sick.

If you're going to go there, petition for the correct use of the apostrophe first.

1st post. Period.

hehe....I just made Frybread + Chili this weekend. I can tell ya that's the entire polar opposite of healthy. It's like chili on top of fair food.

It fucking rocked tho. I only splurge once and a while, but it was worth it.

I eat my chili from a plate w/ rice.

Little bit of chopped raw onion, some jalapenos and shredded cheddar. Crackers on the side if you want filler. I like Ritz crackers.
