So my GF of two years has decided she wants to get a rifle now.  She shoots a couple of my ak's but they are all in 7.62 and she ends up only shooting a mag or so because of recoil.  We have a 10/22 she likes to shoot but now wants to get something with a bit more impact yet without a lot of kick.  To her, a 7.62 is alot of kick, lol.  I can get a good deal on a polish tantal or bulgy ak74 both 5.45 for around 300 each.  Not sure what a good lower price AR would be but I am guessing a decent one can be had around 750 or so.  Both platforms have very low recoil which is the main concern.  I really like the AK type rifles, I shoot m4's all the time for work so I don't really have much interest in owning a rifle like it, but this is for her so I guess I should over look that.  She is in the Army also and is familiar with shooting and caring for     her m4, she actually shoots expert .  From what I have seen, she would like either type but its a surprise for her so I cant just tell her to pick one.

AK74 - cheap rounds, I like them a lot, I can take it with me when I go to the range and pretend its one of my toys, cheap for virtually everything

AR15-  she is familiar with them, accurate which helps her confidence in shooting, can get girly furniture without having to paint rifle

Any ideas, suggestions, would be greatly appreciated.  If its for an AR give me some ideas of good ones around 700-800 please, I don't know much about them.

Thanks

I would get her whatever SHE could afford... if she can afford an AR that's what I would advise her to get.

5.45 is cheap, females tend to be expensive on the firing range IME.  Cheaper ammo meaqns less pain for your wallet.

Do not buy a CAI tantal, if it has to be CAI get a Bulgy.

She bought and paid for a Mercedes C32 AMG for me a few months ago, I think I can splurge on a gun for her.

I wouldnt do the tantal. Those wire stocks have awful cheek weld. I would think that a fixed or collapsible stock would be more comfortable for someone who is still learning.

I say considering her training and familarity with the M16/M4 family, the amount of stuff she can do to it, and the good deals you can find right now..... Get her a decent AR 15 type rifle.

In my opinion, the Tantal.

Has the potential to be more valuable in time. Good gift.

The AR could be comprised of several smaller gifts, and you could build it together over time.
Get both.

We are, just waiting for when her family and my family can be in the same state at the same time.  We have been together for about two years and she puts up with all my crap, like insisting on moving half an hour from Bragg so that I can live in a county that the sheriff will sign for nfa items, lets me have tons of chickens and even helps take care of them.  Even her family is awesome, although I think it was a hint when her big brother (10th mtn) and her dad took me out in their backyard to shoot their guns 10 minutes after just meeting them last year.

That was merely an evaluation to determine proper shovel size and load out required JIC

OP you can get into a basic AR no optics for around $600.00 if you look.

I have the CAI Bulgy and love it.

Edit: Not the best IMO but still a shooter.

They have a 375 h&h.  Maybe I can get that for me and grab a mosin for her.  Seems fair, plus its not like a 91/30 has much more kick than an AR15

I've been debating the same but am heavily leaning towards an AR mainly due to the more refined controls. Slamming a bolt back and forth is fine for the average conscript but chicks worry about broken nails and cuts and things, Have you concidered a 9mm AR? Cheapish ammo (real cheap if you reload), joke recoil, just a few hundred more on the purchase price, and if you don't already own one in the caliber you get to add to your shooting collection at the same time.

I think I am going to get her the s&w mp-15 or.  It's 850 and then I get a 100 mail in rebate, seems like a pretty good deal.  It also leaves enough in the piggy bank for me to jump on a krinkov kit for me, sbr goodness.

Anything bad about mp-15's I should know about?

Build an AR together. Insist because she has smaller hands she must build the lower, and you will build the longer/ stronger upper. Do so at the same time both using guides found here on the site. Help her with the roll pins when it happens (it should, unless she is damn awesome). Then you know two things. She has a cherished rifle you built together, and if you ever split she will sell it, because who wants to explain to a new bf you built an awesome rifle with your last guy?
