HOLDENVILLE, Oklahoma (AP) -- A missing pregnant woman was found dead in a field with her abdomen cut open and her fetus removed, and a woman she had befriended was in custody after bringing a dead fetus to a hospital, authorities said Monday.

A hunter found the body of Carolyn Simpson, 21, in a field near Lamar, about 100 miles southeast of Oklahoma City, on Friday. She had been shot in the head, said Tommy Graham, an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation regional inspector.

Simpson was six months pregnant when she was last seen December 22 at a tribal casino in Okemah where she worked.

One day after Simpson's disappearance, Effie Goodson brought a dead fetus that had reached six months' gestation to a hospital about 30 miles from Okemah, saying she was the mother, authorities said.

Medical personnel determined Goodson couldn't have given birth to the fetus, and the 37-year-old was taken into custody. Graham said he expected she would be charged this week.

Sheriff Houston Yeager called Goodson the prime suspect but said the investigation continued Monday into a motive. "We've got a few more questions we haven't got answered yet," he said.

Goodson and Simpson were introduced by relatives about a month ago, and Goodson was a patron at the casino where Simpson worked, Yeager said. Investigators believe the two left the casino together.

DNA tests will help investigators determine if the fetus brought to the hospital was Simpson's, Graham said.

Two or three times a year (that I know of) you hear of cases involving this scenario, or the one in which the mother of a newborn is killed and the needy sow who did it passes the stolen infant off as her own. For some reason, these animals never seem to get the death penalty. The last time it happened locally (mom murdered, granny shot, baby stolen) death was not even sought by the state.

"Oh but we must be merciful in dispensing justice.  This deluded young woman has her whole life ahead of her.  Surely you can't throw all that away for one tragic incident?"

Just another example of why there in no "God." Oh, but keep praying. It really works. Really.

Unbelievable.

I heard about it on the way to work this morning. The person that has done this deserves the same treatment.

Brilliant logic. I like it. Crime proves there is no law. Disease proves there is no medicine. Folly proves there is no wisdom. Weariness proves there is no rest. Best you stay in bed with the covers over your head.

Anyone else expect to hear that other strange behavior has been evident over the years, but that no one was willing to, or that no one was allowed to, take this person out of the general population because "they have rights"?
I've become a little hardened, and resigned to the fact that these events are going to constantly crop up simply because we as a society are not willing to step up to the plate in a timely fashion when it becomes evident that some of our members are going to be a problem. Pedophiles, murderers, and hard-core chronic criminals seem to be given free reign for a long period of time building up to a crescendo, before we react.
We just don't seem to be able to deal with individuals who everyone knows is going to eventually be a problem until it is too late.
Awful situation, however it turns out that it occurred.

I'm afraid if the courts didn't kill her, I would.  Maybe in prison, maybe before, maybe after, but if she took my wife and child, she WILL pay the ultimate price.  End of story.  If there is a God, I'll work it out with him later.
