5inch 54

eta:  5inch barrel diameter and the 54 has something to do with barrel length.

To heck with the shadow, how about the round captured exiting the muzzle blast?

Just based on what I can see and compared to the rest of the ship, the round looks bigger than 3" or 5" diameter.

Assuming that the barrel is 6' off the deck, it took 0.0000000061 seconds for the light to travel the distance.  Or 1/164 millionth of a second, give or take a little bit that is.

That is a Us Navy Mk45 5 inch naval gun mount.  Its barrel is 54 calibers in length.  Judging from the VLS tubes on the deck, that is either a late-series Spruance class or late-series Ticonderoga class - the ones with VLS.

Says it's the "Arleigh Burke class destroyer USS Benfold (DDG 65)," not that I know what that means.

I KNOW that it would, however never having seen such a thing was what made me go wow. I've seen other hi speed pictures of rounds in flight. Like the one of a round flying through an apple or the one of it splitting a playing card.

Damn, do they make a Phantom or a Vortex for that?

I guess the inside of the red line is good, outside is bad.

It's actually the other way around, inside the red line is the gun traverse/swing area. Outside the line is the safe walkway area. Not that you'd want to be up on the bow while the mount is firing. The concussion is no fun to be near.

Amazing the things you learn here.

54 calibers long?  Does that mean the barrel is 54 times longer than the 5 inch width of the projectile?

Just too cool.

How accurate are they?

Are they used on other ships, or shore targets?

Can someone explain 54 calibers
Link Posted: 3/26/2006 5:51:31 AM EDT

1 caliber=1 inch....

think .50 caliber=half an inch....

1 caliber = 1 width of the shell when speaking of artillery.

5" = approx 125mm

you multiply the diameter of the bore..5 by the cal..54 to get the length of the barrel
in inches 270inches or 22'6".  And that is a DDG.
