I've been on a 3-week trip through Egypt, the Middle East, Turkey, Norway, . . . and now I am in Belgium for a day.  I am going to Amsterdam tomorrow, a full 1-1/2 days before my flight leaves back to the States.  I'm looking for specific recommendations for what to do there.  (I've been before).

Here's the current plans:

Arrive
Check into hotel
visit dam square
visit a coffee shop
visit a strip club
walk the red light district, just for the sights only
go to the Van Ghogh museum
go to the Ann Frank house
sleep
fly home

Any other suggestions?  Things that are "must see"?

Go to the national museum, I believe its called the Reichs museum or something like that.  The Netherlands had a long history of naval power and they have some really interesting stuff on naval history in there.

Enjoy all the sights and sounds...it's a great place to visit.

Do ME one big favour......put you wallet in your front pocket.

You'll thank me

My main advice is above.

But also remember knifepoint robbery is popular there.
If you are not equiped for a knife fight and a BG pulls a knife...

You know the drill.

Otherwise....keep kicking em till they stop moving.

Amsterdam has a very seedy side if you go looking for it....otherwise...drinkers and smokers
Can have a nice time there.

Be wary

Yeh, it's funny how a person needs to hide his wallet/money in a modern/free town such as Amsterdam, but hardly worry about robbery, in poor places like Turkey, Egypt, etc.  Perhaps the more stringent laws in other places are a deterent?

I appreciate the advice, but thankfully, I already realize the negative possibilities of walking around Amsterdam, especially at night.

Go down to the warf and watch the unloading of a drug shipment. That is the ship where all the visable armed are standing around for some reason. Do not miss the Flea market! Do a canal tour. Just remeber it is fan shaped with the archs getting lager and larger. If you watch the tops of unusual buildings for references and the colors of the bridges. You will do okay. If you get lost about 99% speak English. When you get to the church of satan. go across the street and walk on the other side after relieve yourself of liquid rfreshment! And under no cicumstances ever go to sleep it kind of builds up at night. And if a bar maid gives you a free drink and tells you to enjoy. That stuf that you swallowed was not from a dirty glass. Oh and if a girl will dance or come and sit next to you. you are in!

I have never been to a strip club in Amsterdam where the girl were good looking... The hookers are good looking though.

Go to the Sex Museum located on Damarak... It's just  few blocks down from Centeral Station. It's a trip.

1. Hit the Sensi Seed Shop and learn how hash is made.
2. Hit Homegrown Fantasy across the street from the Police Station.
3. Smoke some Northern Lights #5 X Haze.
4. Go down a few brews from the Heineken Brewery.
5. Then walk the Red Light district.

Stay on the main streets in the Red Light District. My cousin and I made one wrong turn and the next thing I know some leather cladded biker dudes asked us to come in for a dance.

The song blaring from inside the club was a dead giveaway.

George Michaels "I want your sex."

Oh, yeah, I forgot about the herds of pickpockets and meth-heads running around over there.

When I went, I kept nearly all of my cash, cards, passport, and other stuff in an under-the-clothes hidden wallet.

I had a very few euros sitting in the bottom of my pocket, mostly coins, for bus fare and sodas and museum tickets and such.

My in-pocket wallet had eight Malaysian ringgit and a Taiwanese 100NT note.  I figured if anyone was dumb enough to try to convert them, it might be usable as evidence against them, assuming I could get the cops to bother to do anything (unlikely).  I still kept a hand on my wallet, since it was one my father had given to me, and I didn't want to lose it.

Get a bicycle, one without a rental company sign on it.  If you even slightly expend the effort, you can get a bicycle in Amsterdam.  Junkies will offer to sell you one for like $5 or so.

Why get a bicycle?  Because it's so much fun to ride in in A'dam!  You're more like a local, you feel like you fit in, and it is just a trip to ride in heavy traffic and see how the cars yield to you whereas in my town, drivers are so unused to seeing bicyclists and motorcyclists they kind of dont register in the brain.
