I have been out for 20 years. In my Army days, the old Deuce was THE general purpose medium duty truck.
It was crude but reliable and would go anywhere you had stones enough to drive it.

So what replaced it?
And would you say it was more or less capable than the beloved Deuce?

LMTV-FMTV M1078 series...just as capable, and faster, more comfortable.

But can you fix it with a crescent wrench, two screwdrivers, pliers, hammer and 100MPH tape?

lol...maybe not, but...fully armored cab now, with turret on top. And if anyone can find pics of the original rolling castle ones with gun mounts on all four corners of the bed with armor plates on the sides....

No.  I commanded a maintenance company and they were a nightmare to keep maintenance up compared to the old M-35 series.  You could literally keep the old series running forever.

They maybe more capable but higher maintenance and less reliable.  At least when I was in.  Maybe different now.

At least they have power steering.
The old 35 was a thumb breaker.

Yes, but you don't need to, at least not nearly as much.   They are way better trucks.   My roommate and I had one as our personal vehicle last deployment.   Nobody else in our company ever wanted to drive it or ride in it.   They fought over the pickups.

I'd like to get the air-assist kit for my Deuce.  I can deal with the cab heat, but turning that sucker on a soft surface (heck, even on a hard surface at a standstill) is a BITCH.

From what I've heard, don't bother.  Not worth the money.  Spend the same amount or a little more and get real hydraulic.

I don't even try to turn my deuce wheel at a standstill.  I let the clutch out and get it creeping.  Wears on the tires less that way anyways, probably.

bad thing is that the armored version is better looking.

If you are driving a cab-over, you are the first one to the wreck.

I will see your F/LMTV and raise you an MTVR. Spent a couple cold nights sleeping in the back of one, and the only trouble I had was a battery tie down came loose and smoked the batteries.

I spent some time in these during my first enlistment.

But nothing really beats the nostalgia and sound of these>

First pic is one tough looking truck.
The second truck was a worthless pig when I was in Alaska.
