Since I was 8, and my Father and my Cub Scout leader taught me knife safety, I have carried a knife. Yes, even in public school. I would be sent to prison nowadays.
Anyway. The ONLY time I do not have a knife is in the shower. Airplane or government building where they search me. I feel naked without my knife.

I have had so many. But my current companion is my Benchmade Mini-Ambush. Stainless, half serrated. 3" blade.  Rock solid. I love it.  I've carried it for about a year and a half now, and except for the scratches on the belt clip, it looks brand new.

I like the 3" blade because it is plenty for me to work with, but I barely notice I am carrying it. The grip is perfect for my hand. The half serrations give me a smooth blade for precision, and nice serrations for power.

What knife do you carry?  Why?

CRKT M16

I carry a Kershaw "Scallion"  I carry it because it is pretty small, yet usable. It has a partially serrated blade, belt clip (I clip it in my pocket) and a spring assisted openning design. I love it.

Why?  It's the only folder I own and hasn't let me down yet.

I actually carry 2.

I carry a cheap clip on folder that i got 3 years ago in a package of Timber Wolf.

It is my work knife (work means scraping on different metals, stripping wire etc)

I also carry a CRKT folder or a cold steel sisu fixed blade for less utilitarian needs.

Benchmade 806 mini-afck purchased around 1995. Hopefully I will be able to retire it as my fiance plans on presenting me with a small regular web-sight sebenza for a wedding present.

It was on sale at Walmart and it said M16 on the blade

I carry mine daily and keep spares at work and lying around my work areas. I ALWAYS have a knife. I abuse my knives so I replace them a lot. Sometimes I just want a new knife so I buy it as a gift to me from me!

This has been a good knife so far. I love the Tanto style blade and serrated is a must if you really want to cut through stuff.

Spyderco Lil Temperance, leaf blade/plain edge. I own MANY knives from various makers and this one seems to have the most useful blade shape, best handle and the best lock I have used. It also is extremely ugly, but hey- you cant have everything!

I used to get cheap knives.  They would break after several months and I would have an excuse to get a new knife.  But now that I get quality, I carry it for a year and a half and then just want to try something different. Even when what I have is fricking great! I like the look of that Tanto you got.  I had a Tanto several years ago and liked it.

Kershaw, bought it years ago at a fun show.  I like it for the speed assist opening action.  I think it was their first model that had the feature.  Black blade, (non serrated) black plastic handle.

Gerber Easy-out.  Less than $30.  I use it like I stole it.  No need to be nice to it or worry about losing it.  It holds an edge fine.  I bought a spare, but haven't needed it.

None, because I can't stand to have stuff in my pockets anymore. It's a neurosis, I know. It just bugs me.

When I'm working in the field, I carry either a SwissTool or Gerber on my belt. I've always got a Swiss Army knife or two within reach.

I clip mine to the inside of my waistband strongside at about 1-2 o'clock. It virtually disappears and you get used to it pretty quick.

I clip mine to the inside, right most side of my right pocket.  It puts it straight line parallel with my right leg at my 3 O'Clock, and I cannot feel it at all, siting or standing or walking.

I used to carry a AFCK March 2000 edition from Benchmade (best knife I ever owned, even over the Microtech)
till I lost it over a boat fishing up near the artic circle for pike :/

Now I carry a AFCK plain Jane model .

If I could find a strong, light, thin, locking folder, I'd give it a whirl. What do you have?

I carry a free full sized, lock blade knife at work, clipped to my right front pocket.  It's good enough to cut anything I need to cut.  From seat belts to candy wrappers.

I have more expensive knives but I carry the free knife in case I loose it.

Emerson Combat Karambit, because it was one of the few legal knives in NYC that could cut through tendons like butter

Swiss army knife because it does anything your locking folders do almost as well and has many more tools I use all the time.  Like the toothpick, tweezers, bottle opener.  if I need serration I just flip out the little saw blade, which is good for cutting down small branches if I need to sit somewhere for a long time while hunting for instance.

Like you I carried a knife ever since I was a kid., yes even throughout school.  My schoold had a "no knives" policy but I ignored it, figuring at the time that they meant no huge fighting knives, and that they would understand that my swiss army knife was innocent and useful.

I now realize they would not agree with my judgement, but oh well.  Hard to believe I carried a knife for 8 years in school and never once threatened or cut anyone else with it.  Who would have thought such was possible?  (sarcasm)

Lately, I'm liking fixed blades.  I have been using a CRKT Bear Claw for most of my office-type needs.  It holds a good edge and is pretty compact - plus the ergonomics are just awesome.  It DOES get some looks from my coworkers on occasion though :P

I also have a Gerber money clip knife with the contractor razor blade in it.  I'm using it more and more, and the little claw has at least temporarily been exiled to use as a boot knife.

I carry a Benchmade 910 Stryker.  For me this is a good balance between blade length and weight.  To help me prevent loosing my knife, I tie a 2' section of parachute cord to help remind me that there is a knife there and also for emergencies, because you never know.

I used to carry a victorinox swiss army mechanic. It was a great knife with lots of useful tools. I wanted something thinner and lighter so now I carry a Kershaw Blur. Going on six months and its still sharp. I really like the assisted opening.

My Benchmade went through the washer last week.  I did not know until I heard CLUNK CLUNK, CLUNK CLUNK in the dryer.

It came out nice and clean and smelling like Tide. I dried it off and put it in my pocket.

Emerson CQC7 Karambit....

If putting a folder into action as quickly as possible is important to you. You can conclude your search and purchase one of these.

and an Emerson Left Hand Commander in my left

The Emerson is amazing. It opens faster then the automatic. It is the best pocket knife I have ever owned and I havent found one yet that I like better.

Kershaw Leek and KaBar TDI (the tiny one)

The Leek:
Small
Thin
Light
Cheap ($35)
Fast "assisted" opening
Sharp as hell
1/3 has a serrated edge.
This is my everyday knive,  use it for everything,  don't even know I'm wearing it.  It'll shave the hair off my arms as long as you keep it sharp.

KaBar TDI:
Wear this when I go out and can't CCW
Small but full size handle
Non folder so fast to draw.
Angled handle makes it draw like a pistol and provide a striking and punching grip.
Serrated and sharp.

Add me to the list of the CRKT M16 carriers.  I chose it because of ease and quickness of opening one-handed, blade design and, most importantly, durability.  I've had SpyderCo and TOPS folders and I always wound up breaking them or wearing down the blade too quickly.
