Since you're renewing a contract, the prices won't be that bad.

Look at some of Verizon's "Next Phones Now".

I had to give a phone to somebody to call 911 while I prepared to take down a guy threatening a bunch of people with a gun Friday night. I think I would have died laughing if she had dialed 911 on my Verizon LG phone and it started to do that.

consumerist.com/consumer/safety/dialing-911-could-be-dangerous-326138.php

"Dialing 911 sets off a loud alarm on newer Verizon phones, potentially putting customers in danger. Imagine dashing under your bed at the sound of an intruder breaking through the front door, only to wonder if you should call 911 from your cellphone because it would reveal your location. A Texas woman was forced to make a similar decision when she discovered that the security chain guarding her vacant property was missing."

The new version is the G'zOne Type-S and the alarm can be turned off now.  I highly recommend this phone.  I bought it for my father who has successfully destroyed or hated the every phone he's touched and he loves it.  It's really well built (shock-proof supposedly), is dustproof with it's covers on, and has actual keys for it's keypad.  The only complaint I've heard is that it's ringer isn't loud enough to be heard in a tractor cab at PTO speed.

Why does your contract have to be renewed. Why not just go month to month. You do know you don't have to renew a contract to keep your service going.

- eleventy billion.

I have had two, both total ball sucking crap.  A friend has a LG Chocolate (I told him he was gay for getting it), he hates it.  Mine dropped calls, had poor reception and had poor battery life.

I literally just got new phones for the wife and I today.  We went with the Samsung Gleam.

I have only had it for a few hours at this point but so far I really like it.  It has a lot more Bluetooth stuff enabled, is an MP3 player, has a NightShot 2 MPixle Camera and is VZ Navigator ready.

I got a sweet corporate discount on mine though, they run about $130.  I go 2 for $140.

I just use the plan (and pay for my share) that my parents use.
