People are primary motivated by their most basal desires IMO, those being the seven deadly sins which are:

Pride
Envy
Gluttony
Lust
Anger
Greed
Sloth

Fear   -added by popular demand

Which motivates you?
Whcih do you think is the primary motivator of others of your species?

MO is that envy is the most powerful motivator and the greatest fault of most.
For me it is pride, hands down.

That list is slightly inaccurate.

The seven Capital sins are:

Pride
Avarice
Envy
Wrath
Lust
Gluttony
Sloth

But you should not discount the 4 Cardinal virtues:

Prudence
Justice
Fortitude
Temperance

Nor the 3 Theological virtues:

Faith
Hope
Charity

How come fear isn't on that list? Fear of failure, or fear of consequences, etc.?

You forgot fear. Fear is a huge motivator for most people, wether they realize it or not. For me, pride and "greed." Probably not greed really, but "reward."

what motivates me?  looking at those who weren't motivated and seeing what became of them.

when i look at someone who's 60 years old and barely makes more money than i do, it motivates me to finish school.

when i see someone who's 600+ pounds and rides a rascal around the grocery store, it motivates me to take care of my body.

when i see the friends i had in highschool who got hooked on drugs, it motivates me to stay clean...  seriously, seeing someone who was a good friend 4 or 5 years ago that is still flipping burgers because he spends too much time with his crack pipe is excellent motivation.

I don't think everyone is motivated by one of the seven deadly sins...

Honestly, if I think about it, I don't really know what I could say 'motivates' me.   Survival?  I work so I can live, but I don't have a family of my own, or kids, so I'm not working for anyone else's survival.  I do have some fun and have some hobbies...  but as for what motivates me?  I couldn't put a finger on it.

Power
Money (which reinforces power)
sex

ETA: not my order of motivators, but power and money turn most people to the dark side in an instant.
