Some sort of hawk or falcon - any idea on the name?
Link Posted: 9/12/2004 3:52:59 PM EST
red tail hawk, looks like.

The long tail feathers make it look like a sharp-shin hawk.

Would be easier to ID it if I could tell how big it is. Sharp-shins aren't all that big

looks kinda like a peregrine

i think peregrine.

i got dive bombed attacked by a red tail in NH. They dont quite look like that. Bigger I think.

i guess it had a nest nearby where i was hiking. took quite a few swipes at me. I had to crawl quite abit of ways because the thing was hell bent. squawking and coming out of nowhere trying to give me a new haircut.

it was an experience.

Definately not a red tailed hawk. It looks like some kind of Falcon but not sure which.

It is NOT a falcon!!

If it is a red tailed hawk, then it is a very small one. I am pretty sure that it is a sharp-shin

It is a Red tailed Hawk

My boss had one that I took care of. They look like that when they are young.

Definitely some sort of bird of prey. Falcon seems logical but if its immature, it will be harder. They just had an article about an african falcon that got lost and showed up in North America.

I agree. Looks like an immature Sharp Shin Hawk. The vertical lines with the "tear drops" on the underside give it away.

ETA It might also be an immature Cooper's Hawk. They both have alot of the same features.

I can't find my bird books and I don't have time to look all across the web but it is most likely a Sharp Shin or Broadwing Hawk.

It is not a falcon.
Red Tailed hawks do not have long, narrow tail feathers, sharp shins and broadwing hawks do.

Bullshit. Hawk tastes almost exactly like owl.

And to make another correction, what the heck is a "kestrel falcon aka chicken hawk"?
An american kestrel is known as a sparrow hawk. I guess unless you're using scientific nomenclature it is kind of irrelevant...
