Tops on my list are: Fokker dr1 tri-plane P-47 Thunderbolt "jug" Fairchild a-10 II warthog Tops would be the P-47 For its day it was survivable, fast enough, much firepower and could carry a good payload. It also flew a ton of sorties with few losses. I watch to much Wings. Anyway what's yours and why?

A-10 Warthog, hands down. Anything that can carry more than twice its own weight in explosive payload, loiter for hours, split trees, take a direct hit, and STILL fly home has definitely got something going for it. If I hit the PowerBall, I'm buying one! FFZ

The f4u came to mind but it was designed for carrier use and was hell to land. Or maybe it was just the Marines....It did make one outstanding land based fighter though. We are poor little lambs who have lost our way...

The P38! One of the few designed before the war and was still useful in it. Didn't the best ace of WWII fly one? Ira Bong on something close to that. 40 kills if I remember right.

F4U-1C Only 500 produced, had 20mm cannons instead of the .50s in the F4U-1A. That's my personal favorite, despite the fact that it was supposedly a real bitch and a half to fly. The Supermarine Spitfire has elegant lines and pretty decent performance too.

The two best American aces in the war flew Lightnings in the Pacific theater, Richard Ira Bong (40 kills, 7 damaged, 8 probables) and Thomas B. McGuire Jr., 38 kills.

Embraer EMB 110 "Bandit" Twin-turbo, reasonably fast, and hard to break. BTW, my wife recently got a ride on Delta's completly restored, 1940 DC-3, NC28341. Man, this crate is done up perfectly to the last detail, even the same 40's issue LIFE magazine in all 21 seat pockets. Took retired DL volunteers four years to restore and it shines like a new dime. My wife had to wear white cotton gloves and booties in order to board. Her first experience in a taildragger, said it kinda spooked her on landing.

I'm gonna answer before I read. Probably P-51.Just a beautiful high performance plane that was one of the best pure plane on plane fighters of its time.Plus had a phenominal range that most European fighters couldn't match, and really didn't need too.A fighter that could take it to the enemy on there own turf.(I know this is a boring choice, not real original as I'm sure lots of guys appreciate this model.) F-16 is another beatiful design.Pure dogfighter and maybe the most manuverable of its era.Too me just a real pretty plane to look at.Its amazing what they've been able to develop this little plane to do as far as tactial ground attack. A sentimental favorite is the A-10.I've always liked the beefy, tough look.Kinda the Bigfoot of aircraft. In my mind this is one of the most purposefully designed airplanes ever built.Pure survivability and death from above. If I see these things loitering around my place in SHTF,all thats left is to kiss my ass good bye!

The Top Three in my opinion: NASA/Grumman X-29A An experimental with forward swept, composite wings. According to Chuck Sewell, the Grumman test pilot that took it on it's first flight, it flew like "a homesick angel". Sewell was so impressed that at the end of the first test flight, he executed a victory roll and was consequently taken off the project because that maneuver wasn't in the flight profile. Only two built. Northrop F-20A Tigershark. A private venture of Northrop with advanced electronics and the same engine as the F-16C. While an F-16 is still waiting for it's navigation system to boot, the Tigershark could be in the air and 30 miles downrange. Only two built. Lockheed (Formerly General Dynamics) F-16C Fighting Falcon. A design with maneuvering performance above and beyond the capabilities of the human pilot. The engineers actually had to dial back the digital fly-by-wire control system to avoid pilot blackouts. http://talbalos.best.vwh.net/aircraft.html

Crap, it's really hard to pick a FAVORITE one. P-51 Mustang F4U Corsair Spitfire P-61 Black Widow B-26 Marauder And hands down the biggest little badass of modern times, the A-10 Warthog. Some years ago, I was up in Maine whitewater rafting. All of a sudden I could feel a strange vibration. I looked back over my shoulder, and there's 4 Warthogs flying down the river. They passed over us, with two pulling up and to the left, and the other two to the right. That was worth the cost of the trip right there.

You're thinking of the Granville Bros.' Gee Bee racers of the late '20s through the mid '30s. The Gee Bees were revolutionary in their day and like nothing ever flown before. They were stubby with a distinctive red and white paint job. In the early '30s, the world was ga-ga over plane racing and one of the most famous was the Thompson Trophy Race. In 1932, a young pilot named Jimmy Doolittle flew the Gee Bee R-1 to victory in the Thompson Trophy race and set a new world landplane speed record of 296 mph. You might remember Doolittle from his fame in Thirty Secondes Over Tokyo, where he won the CMH. Although the Gee Bees were fast, they were also very unstable in the y-axis. This caused them to be VERY sensitive on the controls and prone to crashing. A number of pilots were killed flying this little hot rod. Way cool plane though. A model was used at the end of the movie "The Rocketeer".

That's a hard question. To own and fly, a P51 would definately be #1. Sweetest bird to ever touch the clouds is the SR-71. The least appreciated, coolest looking, but awsome for it's time is the B58 Hustler. Most combat worthy and survivable is the A-10 Warthog. Most impressive to watch is the AV-8 Harrier. Most challenging to fly is the B-1B. I love them all and more!!!!!!!!

P-47 Thunderbolt Bf109 F-104 looks cool f-101, cuz it was really loud f-8 also looks cool And a Piper Super Cub I kind of like the older airplanes. They have more of the hot rod era rather than ultra modern times we live in today.

SR-71 Blackbird is badass, so is a P-51. But my vote would have to be the A-10 Thunderbolt II, aka the Warthog. That thing is badass, especially with the Avenger on the front. Shoots at some ungodly rate of fire. [50]
