WOW... I assumed it paid more than that.. When I started for the state 12 yrs ago (NON leo), I came in at the bottom of the pay band at close to $33k..

With all the changes to the retirement system and that sort of pay - I wonder if what sort of recruitment they will get..

Is there a differential for cost of living? In BFE that would be pretty comfortable, in nova that would mean 5 room mates and ramen.

Not all states are the state police just highway patrol. I know I spent a lot of time doing assault, burglary, theft and drug investigations. Yes, the benefits are great! I know I appreciate them! Retirement is like 6 Saturdays and one Sunday every week!

And FHP is constantly losing troopers to local agencies in S. FL because of this. Florida is the absolute worst place to work for any level of state LEO's, from FDLE to DOC, at least if you want to be able to afford anything besides a singlewide in a trailer park during your career. But you know, we are all a bunch of sorry government employees who supposedly ride the golden gravy train and waste tax dollars so I guess we deserve it.

OK, it is actually $29,910 now, and 31 upon graduation. Still bad, but it is perhaps one of the most professional forces in the state even so. Their hiring requirements are pretty strict. Worse is for State Probation Parole and Pardon Agents. They have some of the highest requirements to include a 4 year degree, and the starting salary is just $27,000. SC hates LE and state employees.

Yeah, Georgia pays state POs very poorly as well.

I wouldn't mind making a little more money, either.

Not sure on the State Troopers, but starting pay for a Illinois Conservation Police Officer it starts at $43.9k and after a one year goes up to $54.8k. Not sure how it scales up after that though.

I didn't think it was sad at all. PSP has a better retirement package too.

No shit.

Coming out of the Army I was looking around and my wife suggested the DPS.

I don't want to do that as a job. I think it would make me feel bad.

NYSP don't stay at that base salary for long.

And on top of that FHP's starting pay is their final pay as well. Unless you promote, or the legislature actually gives a pay raise (which they rarely do), a trooper will be stuck at that base salary forever. FHP has not had a step pay plan in over 20 years.
