What do you think is the most useless piece of equipment found in most commercial gyms?

My vote goes to the smith machine.

I'll have to agree with the OP, the Smith machine gets my vote, although I also hate all the little isolation machines.

Probably more annoying than useless, but seeing a gym spend the money on something like a selctorized curl or side raise machine and not willing to spend money on quality barbells.

Based off of the last gym I belonged to probably the disenfectant. I only saw one person use it but he did use enough to make up for everyone else not using it.

Anything than ends in machine is, IMO pretty useless.

My vote for the most useless goes to side raise machine.

I do use the smith machine sometimes...It works great for inverted rows and incline pushups

Yeah that's true.

GHD is a good machine...(one of the few)

I'd say the front door

Yes I know this ain't GD

Paying to exercise in a gym just seems like such a waste of money. There seems to be so many ways to workout - exercise and yes lift weights without PAYING for a gym membership.

In defense of the GHD I've never see it called the GHDM

How about we rename it GHDJ (J for Jig)

Treadmill - get your candy ass outside*

*Exception if you live anywhere north of Pittsburgh, valid only for the months of December-February.

The machine nobody uses...what else?

4-way head and neck machines aren't useless but they can be dangerous if used incorrectly, to the point that a lot of gyms have taken them out and
won't put another back in for liability reasons.

No machine poses a higher risk of causing a neck injury, except for a guillotine.

How about Louisiana in the summertime where it's over 100 degrees with a humidity of 99%?

I would guess any machine like the bicep curl machine that you put weights on to use. I struggle to understand why you just can't use a bar. They also have a Prowler so I won't judge too much.

Its -35 outside right now and the only running I do outside is to my car and to the door.

Any cardio machine that tells you that you are in the fat burn zone. I love to see the fat slackers months in a row lolly gaggin away on the elliptical and not losing a damn pound for weeks.

Get up early and run before dawn. Exception for the north is due to footing concerns when it's icy, not temperature. If you live somewhere with permafrost we can talk about treadmills.

That depends if you're interested in coaching, community, competition etc...

I get a kick out of that shit too. Oh well it's probably better than the mouth breathers stroking out doing real cardio.

I used the elliptical for almost a year straight, three days a week, and dropped from 205 to 180 lbs..of course, this was 45 minutes of cardio after 45 minutes of weights.

Good job

I went from ~215 down to ~170 in 5 months when I stopped eating shit food and started riding a bike. Diet makes a much bigger impact on weight than cardio

That's badass man. I was referring to the people that gravitate solely to the elliptical/bike/treadmill and totally neglect any form of resistance training.

My vote also goes to smith machine. Especialy the ones that are counterbalanced. I know there are a couple possible uses for a smith machine but overall I think they are horrible.

You've never needed to go up by 5 pounds on a lift? I know with presses especially when I'm trying to get a new max there's no way I can make 10 pound jumps.

This year I'm going to make the 2.5lb plates the most important part of my workout. I'm hoping to go up 5lbs a month on my bench which will net me 60lbs over the course of the year.

That's a good goal, and exactly why 2.5 plates are useful IMO...

I can't believe I'm the first to say it, Leg Press machine! I'd take a Smith machine over a Leg press any day of the week!

Hip Abductor and adductor machines. Used exclusively by fat assed women in an attempt to spot reduce.

45's are the most useful for my bench workout.

So very impressive. If you ever decide you need to go up by 5# you might be screwed without those 2.5s# though.
