I'm trying to get some ideas for a sub-$800 FUN firearm.
So far I've been thinking about getting a 10/22 and converting it to .17 Mach2. I did a .22 magnum-.17HMR conversion for a buddy and it was fun as hell to shoot. The other idea was to build a Mk II with a tactical solutions upper and a CMORE dot but I think I want a rifle since I love to shoot for precision. Ammo must be reasonably priced and it has to be something a gun noob female can comfortably shoot. |

Potato launcher!
The last one we built as a kid went through my buddy's sky light and mashed itself against the fireplace. Needless to say he had problems sitting for several days. |

Get a 10-22 and one of those folding stocks for it. Then get a bunch of high cap magazines and a cheap bipod. Ammo is dirt cheap, it won’t cost much, it’s light and has low recoil so women and children wont have problems shooting it…
And, when you get tired of the tactical 10/22 you can convert it back to normal in a couple minutes. |

My 1913 Mauser Broomhandle.
It just oozes history and it is fun to shoot with the stock. Checkpoint Charlie's is selling mismatched ones for under $600. And it fun bringing these old guns back to life. |
Where can I get one for less than $800? BTW, I used to have a 10/22 but sold it when I was in dire need of cash. I always loved those little rifles and like the guy above said, the possibilites are endless. Funny thing about 10/22's, the older and more worn out they are, the better they seem to shoot. |

Bulgarian Makarov. For whatever pittance I paid for the thing, it just works, everytime. Pretty darned accurate as well.

I would vote for a semiauto 22 pistol. I have a S&W 2206 that is ball. On the other end of the recoil spectrum, I love to shoot 2liter bottles of water with my Beowulf. I have never fired any of the 17 caliber rifles, so I cannot compare anything other than price. part of the fun of the 22s is the pice, you loose that when your goto the 17s.

Rhineland arms R22, even with a red dot its less than $800 bucks
for a plinker I would say yes, causes alot of mehem loud, powerful and scary |
Walther P22 with a laser. Fun and be sure to get the green "tactical" one!!! |
$200 Rem870
$30 Clay thower $7 box of clay birds $5 box of shells Im really starting to get into trap shooting when I have time...loads of fun and cheap too! |
Apparently you missed the part where I said "sub-$800". |
I only read the title. Um, my Ruger .22 pistol, I guess. |

A 10/22 with the Mach 2 barrel and a scope is Much more fun than a plain 22lr ! I have an Eabco barrel and bolt handle on mine...the GF loves it ! Less than $400 including scope. Ammo can be had for ~$4 box of 50
I agree. Mine's a hell of a lot of fun. I've never tried to shoot it for groups, but it's GREAT for blasting stuff. And I let a girl shoot mine the first day she ever held a firearm. She loved it too, but then she wasnt' afraid of them and wasn't recoil sensitive. And they're WELL sub-$800. They're sub-$100. |
Probably my Underwood M1 Carbine. But my Marlin Camp 45, Ruger 10/22, and EMF/Rossi 1892 Short Rifle in .357 are all close behind.
LArifle, bitch'n set-up! Where'd you get that stock and barrel for your .22? |
The stock is a Federal Ordanance underfolder, they have'em on Egay sometimes. The barrel I had done by Mike at ABS, cut down to 11" and had the 5.5" permed on. I'm just glad you measure OAL with the stock open |

Heck, man, if you don't have a 10/22, that's what you need to get. If don't trick it out too much and have some $$$ lecft over, pick up a Mossberg 500 Cruiser like XM-15 posted. I bought one last week for $230 and am waiting on an ATI pistolgrip buttstock ($40) to come for it.

Ruger 10/22 with reliable magazines or a Taurus Model 62 pump rifle.
The 10/22 will get more faster, but the Taurus can neuter a gnat from 50 feet. |
I think I'm gonna go ahead and build a 10/22. Here's the list I have so far:
Tactical Solutions 16.5" fluted/threaded bbl Hogue Overmolded stock Tac. Sol. mount Some kinda scope that isn't a huge monstrosity (Leupold Rifleman maybe) Some kinda rings Volq. hammer and extractor Harris bipod After I get it built, the next bit of spare cash I have will go toward buying a suppressor. I have come to the point that I'm gonna have to go with NFA stuff to keep me entertained. |
As crazy as it sounds the 5 CETMEs I own, 2 with HK tele stocks. I like shooting them more than the ARs or the NFA m-11.

i'm looking to pick up a Kel Tec SUB2000. it's a 9mm or .40 folding carbine that looks fun as all hell. it can take beretta, glock, S&W, and sig mags (depending on the model) so it will pair up nicely with whatever handgun you have.
Oh I read funniest, not funnest. I was thinking my Henry Arms Survival break-down .22....Have NO idea why I bought this thing....
I'm voting Ruger 10/22... I've got more than 250,000 rounds through mine.. bought it used in 1973...
I gotta agree. |
You just missed one in the EE that I sold. |
Get the KRINKER PLINKER
I'd have to say my 1919. I built it for ***around*** $800 IIRC........
CETMEs are literally a blast to shoot and own. I only paid $325 for mine and $1.97 each for 40 brand new G3 aluminum mags. Everyone trashes Century but I have never had one jam with my CETME and I fire every kind of crappy ammo I can get my hands on. Be careful though, when the empties kick out it will literally draw blood on innocent bystanders. |
