Not enough traffic in the applicable forums for the large cross section of replies I am looking for.

I am doing a third attempt on a caribou hunt that requires cover 50+ miles in some pretty rough alaska mountain backcountry.  For years I have been using my ice climbing boots, which are heavy but definately waterproof.

I was about to pull the trigger on a pair of danner pronghorns for me and my hunting partner (wife), when I heard that they leak badly.

There is alot of water up here, walking through small streams, deep muskeg/tundra that will saturate a less waterproof boot.  This is one of the tougher hunts out there, so I also need it to be as light as possible.

What do you think?

ETA:  Also, what boot waterproofing method/product do you use?

I have an older 1000gram model of these and they are still waterproof after 7ish years. I only wear them in hunting season though but hunt the shit out of them.
nice boots

rubber boots are the way to go if you are going through lots of water. used to work as a surveyor and those were all i'd wear if i knew there was swamp land. be sure to get some thick wool socks, will make things much more comfortable.

not good if you have a lot of hills to climb, but no goretex boot will beat them in water.

I hear what you are saying.  I may have overstated.  I have no intention of walking in standing water.  We can typically stay mostly clear but there is alot of potential.

What I am hoping for is a good, supportive, sheep hunting style boot that won't leak if I have to step through some wet stuff.

these:
Hanwag

I have been using these exclusively for hunting for the last 8 years - none better,,,
However - if you are hunting in swampy conditions, I would go with the felt lined rubber boots and bring an extra set of liners...

LL Bean is supposed to be coming out w/ some new superboot - I will check it out

My googling isn't turning up an Ll bean superboot.  I'll check the hanwag out.

I love my regular Vioz's so I'd choose these for a higher field boot.

Kenetrek pack boots.

In my opinion these are the best damn rubber/pack boots on the market.  Check out their site and order with confidence.  Give their customer service a call and they will get you exactly what you need.  Oh and they are out of bozeman, mt too.

Any leather/Gore-Tex boot is going to end up wet crossing streams and standing in water or wet swamp.  If not from the water leaking in, then from the water leaking down from your wet pants.  If it's wet I wear my Lacrosse Alpha 3.0's and HH Impertech.  I have the new Danner Pronghorn's and they aren't a bad boot.  What kind of hunt are you doing?  Fly-in drop-off, 5 mile death march off the Dalton, 40 mile, Denali Highway road hunt?

It's the kenai mountain Caribou Draw Tag - The access starts with about 15 miles up the ressurection pass trail heading south out of hope.  From there you gain the ridgeline (read bushwacking) and then continue several miles back into the head of big indian valley.

I drew the tag two years ago and got my ass kicked.  GPS said I covered over 50 miles on each of the two trips I did in there.  I really need a one boot fits all because I am space/weight limited to what I can carry that far.

These damn caribou think they are dall sheep.

ETA:  I understand your point about no "hunting/hiking" boot being ideal and completely waterproof.  I'm just looking for the best I can get.

I'm familiar with that area:

Scarpa Liskamm's
Hanwag Mountain Light GTX
Scarpa Charmoz GTX
Lowa Sheephunter from Schnee's
Lowa Tibet GTX
Kenetrek Mountain Extreme
.
.
.
Menidel Alaskan Hunter
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
Danner
Merrel
etc.

At the top of the list, just pick the one that fits best.  Barney's and Alaska Mountaineering and Sportsman's Warehouse if you're in Anchorage.  What every you buy, don't forget to get some Green Superfeet insoles and some Obenauf's.

But a real Alaskan would wear their xtratuffs.

How's the boot search going?  You know you need to get 100 miles in those suckers before you take them in the field right?
