Apparently Norinco made the SKS in 5.56 and a few were imported in before the ban on Chinese imports.
I would find one of those. |

I don't know of a 5.56 that is as good as the SKS. It would have to be fed by stripper clips.

In regard to replicating what it looks like and how it operates, and/or being of the same time? No idea.
In regard to being rugged, simple, and cheap like it? SU-16 variant (D perhaps?) I guess. Takes 20 and 30 round M16 magazines. |

Not a 5.56/.223 rifle, but you might consider getting a .30 M1 Carbine to compliment the SKS. At least that is what I did. They both were designed around the same period of time (WWII). Both were originally issued with smaller capacity magazines (10-15 rounds). And, they faced each other during the Cold War, on the Korean Peninsula, and Vietnam. With a little digging, one can find a USGI Carbine. Also, one can easily find slings, magazines, magazine pouches, bayonets, etc. to go along with the Carbine.

James An MAS 49/56 would be a good western compliment to the SKS. Unless you know you are getting a reliable 7.62 conversion, stick with the 7.5. |

Given the original question, gotta be the Mini-14.
The Mini gets a lot of mostly undeserved hate here, so see www.perfectunion.com for tips on how to tweak the Mini-14 and Mini-30. FWIW, I have won a lot of bets shooting my original-barreled, and slightly-tweaked Mini-14 against shorty AR owners. A LOT of money. |

As has been covered, the Mini-14 is probably about as close as you can get to 5.56 US/NATO SKS. Even so it's very different. The Mini-14 by most accounts is subpar and over priced, especially compared to an AR15.
The SKS and the AK47 on the other hand, is a different story entirely. |

I recently discovered FN49 My first thought was, cool, looks like a NATO SKS
Most often in 8mm, I've heard they also have 7mm and 30.06 Almost bought one, may have to get one later. |
