I think this every time a liberal asks me how I am going to fix various societal problems, if I reject the liberal approach.

First time I was in a gun control argument, the liberal asked me my thoughts of fixing the school shooting and youth violence problem, and I had no idea what to say.  I basically had considered it not my problem, since I knew one person still in school, and knew nobody in a violent area of town.  I had no control over those areas, and they didn't affect me.  I was too focused on bringing in some money so I could establish some financial security and provide for myself.  Certainly nobody gives a spit if I live in a box or in a house.  I had to provide for myself, if for no other reason than that nobody was going to get real eager to give me money.

Why do the liberals expect me to have a solution to the violence?  All I want to do is to persuade the liberal that getting their greasy paws on my gun is NOT the answer to violence elsewhere.

So what is our duty to society?

This "Duty to Society" business is a thinly veiled trap used by the Libs.
They use the purposely ill-defined but far-reaching concept of "Society" to enforce whatever cause celebre they are touting at the moment.  Your refusal to acknowledge the primacy of Society over the individual is a hallmark of the free-thinking non-Liberal.  
They will use that refusal to paint the refuser as a dangerous,[b]anti-social[/b], selfish individual.  
First off, ask them to define [b]exactly[/b] what "Society" is.
Assuming they are able to put forth a coherent reply (it is up to you to force them to do so; they will be as vague as you let them be), then ask them why a duty is owed to society at all.  This should have them choking on their words, as such a concept, to Libs is [b]unquestioned[/b], and therefore, usually poorly thought out on their part.  You are just helping them to make fools of themselves.
The correct answer to such a question, of course, is that you have no "Duty to Society" at all.
All that's needed for a sane human to live in society with other sane humans is for the individual to renounce the first use of force.  
So don't ever fall into the traps set by Libs.  [b]Never[/b] let them define the rules of the discussion, and always make them define their terms and concepts exactly.
Do that a few times, and they will avoid you like the plague.

So I should stop picking my nose at the camera?

Everyone has a duty to society but it isn't to fix everyone else. You should start with yourself.

As for the school violence issue, the real problem isn't weapons it's the kids themselves and they are the results of the parents.  I have one in middleschool and quite frankly hadn't been exposed to school and parenting since I was a kid which was more years ago than most of you have been alive.  Things have changed boy.  I can remember when my parents split up it was like carrying a sign around like the scarlet letter, "Divorcees Kid".  Now, it's kind of like, "Wow, you have two parents." and we wonder why kids are violent.  Some of these parents are so bad, it almost makes me feel like they should be sterilized to prevent more of the same. Yet, we as a society proliferate this.  "Yes, daughter now you are sixteen. You can get pregnant now and get your own welfare check."

Thursday a son of a long ago friend wrecked his car killing his girlfriend while in a high speed chase fleeing from the local LEO.  They had been on an armed robbery and burglary spree.  I remembered how years back how my then social group would look at each other and say the kid doesn't stand a chance.  His mom was a nut with loose morals and his father likeable but worshiped the Budweiser God over all else.  When I read it in the paper, I called a couple of mutal friends and the comment was the same.  "Didn't stand a chance. Hope they keep him in jail this time."

When you look at societies with little or no crime you will find one eliment in common, a strong family unit.  China is a classic example where there is rampant poverty yet low crime.  So when asked what is my duty to society, "It is to my family.". The rest will fall into place on it's own.
