If they were working at equal speeds what is better? Where does the celeron fall in the whole "P" series thing?

The Celeron was the cheap version with less onboard cache. With equal clock speeds, the pentium class chip will be faster.

So, the P3 of equal speed is faster or is the P4 of equal speed faster? How does the bus speed factor in or does it?

There are several versions of Celerons. Some were based upon the P3 chips, later Celerons were based upon the P4 chips. The P4-based Celerons will easily be faster than the Pentium III chips. The current fastest Celeron is 2.93GHz...that'll smoke a Pentium III. Probably any of the P4-based Celerons will be faster than the fastest Pentium III.... I think the P4-based Celerons started at 1.7GHz and the Pentium III's stopped around 1.13GHz.

If we compare P3-based Celerons to P3's, then most all of the straight up P3's will win, but we may find a few exceptions with the fastest of the P3-based Celerons and the slower P3's.

Celerons are crippled Pentiums.
They have less L2 cache than the Pentiums.

How do you know if your celeron is P3 based or P4 based?

What is the most powerful Intel chip and the most powerful AMD chip and which is best out of those 2 for the most kick ass machine?

How do you know if your celeron is P3 based or P4 based?

What is the most powerful Intel chip and the most powerful AMD chip and which is best out of those 2 for the most kick ass machine?




The most powerful Intel chip is going to be the Pentium 4 Extreme Editions, and the fastest AMD chip will be an Athlon64 FX-55 or an Opteron of some kind.

The AMD chip will make for the best system, though there is nothing really wrong with using an Intel, as the AMD kool-aid drinkers would have you believe.

Intel is alright.
If you want to go dual core however, go with AMD Athlon 64X2.
Intel's dual core sucks now.
Who knows in the near future how Intel's later generations of dual cores will turn out.
For now, go AMD.

What is a dual core chip? From that link that was provided the AMD seemed to do best in the graphics benchmarks.

Interesting that 9 out of the top ten selling chips on tigerdirect are AMD.

In a dual core processor the chip actually has two processors on it. A few years back Sun was looking at how to improve the efficency of their systems. They realized that the input/output paths were sitting unused while the cpu chewed on the last intruction that was given to them. To fix that the added another core processor to the chip. So while one side calculates, the other side is recieving or transmitting its data.
