Paramedics Pull Bluegill From Man's Throat
Fish Becomes Lodged, Dies
MACOMB, Ill. -- A fisherman was hospitalized with damage to his esophagus after a bluegill became lodged in his throat.
Jamie Woods, 29, of Colchester was listed in fair condition Monday at McDonough District Hospital in Macomb.
Officials said Woods, who was fishing at the time, was playing with a bluegill in his mouth when it began squirming and lodged itself in his throat Sunday.
Hospital paramedics and the Colchester Rescue Squad rushed to a home near Plymouth, which is about 20 miles southwest of Macomb. At the home, they found Woods struggling to breathe.
A phone call to authorities indicated Woods was turning blue and coughing up blood.
The 4-inch long fish was wedged sideways inside Woods' throat.
Using forceps and a lighted scope, the paramedics pulled the fish out then transported Woods to the hospital.
Police said the fish was dead when it was removed from Wood's throat.
