I have read that they won't help you for most of the biochemical weapons that could be used.

They are also no good in a fire.

What situation would they be best for?

They are good to protect you from weapons that must be inhaled or affect the eyes, like teargas.  Blistering agents and nerve agents that can be absorbed through the skin and such really require the whole NBC suit.  Accordingly, I've never placed a whole lot of emphasis on having one.  They are cheap enough that I guess I should, but they are of only limited usefulness AND you have to have it with you when said agent is released.  Truthfully, I think they would be of most use in situations like the one the Branch Davidians faced.  Against terrorists?  I'll take my chances w/o one...
