They are good to protect you from weapons that must be inhaled or affect the eyes, like teargas. Blistering agents and nerve agents that can be absorbed through the skin and such really require the whole NBC suit. Accordingly, I've never placed a whole lot of emphasis on having one. They are cheap enough that I guess I should, but they are of only limited usefulness AND you have to have it with you when said agent is released. Truthfully, I think they would be of most use in situations like the one the Branch Davidians faced. Against terrorists? I'll take my chances w/o one...

What Golgo said is true as far as it goes, but since they are relatively cheap, I think that it's better to have and not need than need and not have. Especially given the potential consequences of needin' and not havin'.
