My definition is…
Weapons: 10 or more
Ammunition: 500 lb./10,000 rounds (which ever comes first)

A govt facility containg hundreds of small arms and hundreds of thousands of rounds. Your definition makes my bedroom an arsenal many times over.

If all of your weapons won't fit into 2 safes you MIGHT have an arsenal.

Otherwise if you have 10 or more of the same type gun, I would consider that an arsenal,

I do not consider 20 different types of guns an arsenal.........but this is my perception of the word.

If it can fit into one 6X6, it is just an "accumulation."

If it will fill up most of a tractor-trailer, then it is a "cache."

If it takes two 40 foot containers, contains at least 50,000 rounds in at least 6 different calibers, has a working Bridgeport, 110 and 220 current, two skilled armourers, and enough fat old gun-nut men to fill up a full-service nursery home.....then you have an arsenal.

I wouldn't consider it an arsenal until we are talking about a warehouse.

Media sooooo overblows that word. The guy with one gun is more dangerous, he is probably very familiar with it.

I am an arsenal by your definition.
Link Posted: 3/17/2005 2:47:23 PM EST
Well, according to the media scum, I probably have enough weapons and ammunition to start World War 3. In actuality I'm not even close to that!
Link Posted: 3/17/2005 2:50:23 PM EST
I would consider multiple rifles and pistols with common mags and ammo an arsenal; should be sufficient to arm at least a dozen people and include spare parts and cleaning supplies.

I just made that up so feel free to edit.

Ok, now what about Hobby vs. Obsession?

I agree. The textbook definition of an arsenal is exactly that--a repository of arms and ammunition for the military.

I, on the other hand, have a wide variety of firearms, no two of which are identical (with the exception of two .22LR Marlin Youth models, for my sons). Not even my ARs are standardized--every one is different.

What I have is a collection, not an arsenal.

I'm going to answer without looking up a definition.

To me, an arsenal would be a cache of weapons (of any size) intended to arm a group of people in times of crisis.

So, if you have five secured rifles that are handed out when the British are coming, and turned back in when the British are leaving, then that's an arsenal.

If you have a closet with 200 rifles in it, that are all yours and that you don't let anyone else touch let alone fire, that's not an arsenal. That's a collection.

And IMHO, the amount of ammunition is completely immaterial to whether it's an arsenal or not.

When someone can ask me if I have any random longarm and I go "Yah, I think I got a couple of those, let me check"...

I got an arsenal then

These qualify.

No, your just getting started.

The last place I worked with over 2500 M16's, 500 M9's, 250 203's, 22 AK's, 10 1014's over 500 M249's, 250 or so M240's 50 M2's and 50 MK19's plus some tows and other stuff is an arsenal, till I get up to that I have nothing.

Congratulations, you're definition is the same as Sarah Brady's. I guess you'de have been first in line for an "arsenal license" if they'd ever managed to get that passed into law.

I've never understood it when people say "enough to start a war". I only need one gun and one round of ammo to start a war. Hell, people were starting wars long before guns existed.

Now having enough to fight a war, that's something to talk about.
Link Posted: 3/17/2005 4:20:22 PM EST
goody for me, by your definition, I've got to get more guns and ammo.
Link Posted: 3/17/2005 4:23:18 PM EST
If you have more than one gun with more than 20 rounds, then you my friend have an arsenal.
Link Posted: 3/17/2005 4:25:06 PM EST
When I come home after a long day at work and hand my weapon over to the armorer working in the spare bedroom, then MAYBE I'll admit to having an arsenal.

Arsenal - The shit in my closet.
Link Posted: 3/17/2005 4:30:08 PM EST
If you can arm the residents of your neighborhood with 1each of handgun, rifle and shotgun and still have half that amount in excessleftover, then that is an arsenal. Otherwise it's just enough.

10 or more is a "collection"

to me an arsenal is multiple guns of the same make and model, like a 50 M16's in a National Guard Armory or something. 50 guns of different types, makes, calibers by one person is a collection.
Link Posted: 3/17/2005 4:43:16 PM EST
One more then I have at any given time.
Link Posted: 3/17/2005 5:19:27 PM EST
fxntime beat me to it.

An arsenal is one more firearm than I have, and 10K more ammunition than I have.
Link Posted: 3/17/2005 6:23:57 PM EST
Its only an arsenal if you can outfit a battalion sized unit with firearms, squad weapons, ammo loadout, grenades, and other assorted things that go BOOM. Otherwise, its just a fine collection
