Sound like caps... we used to shoot boxes of primers with our BB guns when we were 10-12 yrs old.

You may also get a bullet stuck in your barrel. That is, if you meant with a bullet in the case with just the primer. which after I read the second time, you didn't.

turn the lights off first. Muzzle flash. And make sure it's really not a real bullet and aim in a safe spot.

I shot one of those Natec polymer rounds without a bullet or powder.. After I pulled the bullet with my fingers and dumped the powder... Louder than a cap gun.. Little bit of a flash...

I did one a while ago, depends on how long your barrel is, they seem to muffle the sound alot.

A loud cap gun +1.
Not as loud as a firecracker though. Gotta clean your barrel when you're done though. It gets the barrel very dirty. You can put a moist rag over the end do soak up some sound. Oh yea, it might get a bit singed. Less so if moist. |

Shouldn’t amount to much in a rifle.
I’ve fired primers in handguns indoors and found them unpleasantly loud. However, I have tinninitis (sp) so I’m probably especially sensitive to loud sounds. While a single primer isn’t going to be a problem, keep in mind most primers contain a small amount of lead. |

I've got a bag of rubber bullets that I bought in the 90's that you fire out of a .357. You just load them in a primed case. Not that load out of a 6'' barrel. A hell of a lot of fun.

primers all sound the same. The length of the barrel might change the tune a little bit, but not to the point that you'd notice.

A few months ago I wanted to test the primers on some 7.62x54R milsurp and see if they were corrosive. I drove a nail into a block of wood and put a primed case over it that I had pulled the bullet and dumped powder out of. I hit the primer with a nail punch and hammer. It was a little loud but nothing much worse than a small firecracker. Some flame shot out of the case and blackend the wood around the nail slightly.

If you cut of the tip off a shotgun shell (birdshot is best), dump the shot and remove the cup/wad and then dump the powder. Assuming you made a fairly straight cut, smack the forward end of the shell on a hard (non-metalic) surface to remove more powder. Now use a small (1/8") wooden dowl to carefully scrape around inside and remove the remaining powder.
Now that there is only the primer, cut the shell down to the rim (or paper roll) and then insert it into the barrel. When you fire it, it sounds like a .22..... The first time I did that, I fired it standing in the front doorway expecting a little crack like a cap gun..... It's only loud IMO, because the bore diameter is so large. |

I did that once except I hit the primer with a screwdriver and a hammer (I was a kid at the time). I must not have gotten all the poweder out cause the shot from it shattered the screwdriver in my hand. I made a note to not do that ever again. I am however not as stupid as some people I knew who would actually smash .22 shells with rocks and make them go off. Suprosed no one died. I was there once when they were doing it, and after they didn't listen to me about not doing it. I decided I should exit the situation. |

You might also want to slip a plastic bottle over the muzzle to capture the smoke and ash that the primer will produce. Last I heard, most primers contain lead compounds. No need to let that spread around your house.

I couldn't help myself.
I pulled the bullets and powder out of a couple Wolf .45 and 7.62X39 cartridges and fired them off. Wasn't much louder than a cap gun. Unfortunately, my kids cat is now afraid of the sound of a 45 being racked and of my AK. Didn't do it intentionally, sorry, he just happened to be in the room. I didn't see him, honest.
