Not in terms of "collecting" guns... just to say you have them, and then keeping them as safe queens.... but what guns should you have have in terms of "using" guns?
An answer could be something like this.... "Well... you need a bolt action in something medium, 30-06, 308. Then a 22 for plinking, Then a handgun, then a semi auto rifle." |
There are a few schools of thought on this...
You SHOULD have a handgun (take your pick), a shotgun (same), and a rifle (AR ). Though once you get into it, your handgun choices open up and you think "I started off with a 9mm, now I want a .45" so you wind up with one or four of those. Then you get an AR but you want another one to hang other stuff on, and then you pick up a .308 because you like the idea of having a longer range caliber... And you wind up with a safe full of toys. |
I need a 30 30 winchester lever action. with an EOtech. for deer. and for SHTF, since its IDIOT proof (put dot on looter, squeeze, operate lever, put dot on looter, squuze........) |

Pretty vague. It depends on your preferences. Aside from personal defense (where preference debate could run a 40 page thread), there are numerous areas of sport shooting & hunting that require different types of arms.
It's like asking, "What clothes should you own?" |
I will offer some catagories and then my suggestions for each. I base this partly on my personal tastes, partly on experience, and partly on the advice of gunsmiths and military armourers I have known.
Shotgun: Remington 870 12g.: I am told it is phenominally dependable and extremely strong. Revolver: So difficult to beat a S&W Model 10 M&P. Has the same reputation as the 870. Semi auto pistol: I'm old fashioned so I go for the classics. Belgian-made Hi Power 1911A1 Makarov (great pocket pistol. Don't get the one with target sights) .22 rifle Marlin 39 (again, like the 870 in dependability and durability). Center fire rifle: AK-type in .308 AK-type in 7.62 When it comes to "needed" weapons, the huge problem (if it can be called a problem) is that there are many millions to choose from. |
.38 and a .22 is all you need..........
I will have to say an AR. This is AR15.com ya know! |

good point. What I am REALLY trying to do... is justify the purchase of MORE firearms.... "well... the guys thing we all should have a remington 700 in 308.... and... so.... i think i should get one." |
so. you thought my question was st00pid? |
Oh, that was just a point I was trying to make. I wouldn't likely have 9mm in my house if it weren't for my wife. I'm a .45 guy. |
This is the real problem, you don't need to justify buying more guns |

Question is too broad. For self-defense I would recommend the following as a minimum:
(1) Centerfire Rifle, Military/Police pattern semi-automatic, 5.56, 7.62, or 30.06. (2) Shotgun, 20 guage or larger, pump or semi-auto. (3) Handgun, semi-auto, in 9mm .40 S&W or .45 ACP. |
Firearms:
1. an AR15 2. a quality 1911 (I prefer my Kimber Gold Match) 3. a Baretta 92 4. a Remington 700 bolt action rifle in 30.06 or .308 5. a Mossberg 500, 590 or Remington 870 12 gague Magazines: 20 mags for the AR, 10 mags for the handguns. Ammo: 5,000 rounds of 5.56 of your choic 2,000 rounds of .45 JHP 2,000 rounds of 9mm 250 rouns of 30.06 or .308 500 assorted 12 gague That is a good start. |
Well lets see.
I have the Mossy 500 so I need a 870 I have the 1911 but I really need more I have the revolvers but could use more I have .22 for plinking but need more I have the AR need many more in different configuations I have the AK but need more A nice bolt gun in 30-06 just for the options it offers in bullits and hunting AH hell I need them all |
Every household in the United States should own a Garand and a 1911. |
That would be a very polite society. |
What you should have depends on what you plan to do wih them. A person who never shoots skeet probably doesn't need a gun suited for that. A person who never shoots black powder will probably never need one of those. It all depends on what YOU like to do with your guns.
Different guns are suited to different tasks. No one can predict the future, so you never know which tasks you'll need to perform. Therefore having "all of them" is the only acceptable option. |

Self Defense pistol
-something like a glock 19 fits the bill perfectly. 15 rounds and small enough to conceal. Sigs are great to. Ofcourse you can always go with the classic 1911 Self Defense Carbine -AR15 is prefered, and a 16in barrel offers the most versatility. AK's work, but your trading vastly better ergonomics for a slight increase in reliability IMO. Shotgun -Remington 870, as reliable as death and taxes, and can go from hunting deer, to hunting foul, to hunting terrorists and BG's with a few extra barrels and a magazine tube. If I HAD to only have one gun, this would be it. Mossy's are good too but 870's are a bit more sturdy 22 rifle -we cant all spend 100 dollers for a case of ammo for practice, so a good 22 rifle makes sense. Plus they are relitively quiet and great from a survivalist piont of view for getting dinner(squirrels rabits). I like 10/22's cause you can build it into anything, but ive heard good things about remington 597's. These last two could be one, but ill separate them. Main battle rifle -FAL. M14, AR10, or M1 Garand all fit the bill. I really like FAL's due to cheap mags and the fact it uses 308. If you arent willing to fork out 700-1000 dollers you can get a pretty good Garand for 400 bucks through the CMP. Centerfire hunting rifle -In a pinch the above rifle could perform this duty, but its far from perfecton, mainly due to accuracy and what type of optics you would generally use. A good Rem 700, win 70, ruger 77, savage, tikka, ect all work wonders. 30-06 or 308 are best due to versitility and ammo availibility. A good 3-9X scope is the most versital. It can pretty much take down anything in North America and when the SHTF it can double as a long range percision rifle. edited spelling |
A reliable, accurate rifle, a reliable, accurate defensive shotgun and at least TWO reliable, accurate hanguns are required PLUS lots of ammo for all the above.
A pistol that is small enough to conceal and big enough to fight with-GLOCK 19
A bolt action .30 cal-Remington 700 in .308 A semi auto fighting carbine 16" AR A semi auto .22 rifle 10/22 |
Reliable ones, and ones that the owner is very familiar with.
A 50bmg rifle for long range.
A 308 rifle for medium range A 5.56mm rifle for short to medium range. A 9mm sub-machingun for close range. A 12 gauge shotgun for close range. A 9mm handgun for very close range. With the exception of the shotgun all your ammo needs can be met by the government should the need arise. This should cover everything you need to do. |
2 AR's
A carbine and a 20" rifle AKM A 12g 1100/870 .270 2 handguns |
"Should"? Hmmm... I'd say ideally you "should" have every one you desire.
I have all of those mentioned plus just a few more (my kimber is a ultra CPD). This is a excellent list of guns to have. If I had to give up a few I would keep those listed. Might give up the Baretta for a d/a 357 revolver...Good list |
I should have more AR's & AK's
I should have a precision .308 I should have a Barrett 50 I should have a few FAL's |
2 HLDR (Homeland Defense Rifle) (AR, AK, whatever) that are identical to each other
2 Pistols that are identical to each other That would cover 99.99% of scenarios not counting hunting. Two is one. Use your guns, and that gun will be siezed as evidence (your fancy ACOG, Surefire and all...keep them identically equipped). This also allows you to rotate your weapons while shooting, so you can prolong their lifespan. People will say you need a .22 I don't think so. Unless you are really really really poor, its not hard to shoot your primaries. A more rounded, but small arsenal for (ONE shooter) 2 HLDR 3 Pistols (one to keep in the car or you bug out bag) 1 Accurized 308 or heavier gun (semi, bolt your call) to be used for long range sniping, hunting, a semi could double as a heavy HLDR etc 1 No bling HLDR for trunk/truck gun 1 22 Pistol 1 22 Carbine You can find some 22 long guns that share magazines with pistols, browning comes to mind |
I should have every gun that makes King Daley ball up into a fetal position and suck his thumb.
I have an excellent start!!! |
Everybody needs a pistol/rifle combo that shoots a 6mm plastic BB.
I like pie......
And my FAL, my Remington 870 Tac, and my USP45 compact. (in stainless, Its pretty, like me! |
Well, everyone needs at least 4 guns. 1 .308 or larger for big game/long range. 1 AR/AK type for medium/short work. One pistol [glock] (9mm or .45), and one rem 870.
Enough ammo for each to be able to run them for a while without restock. Reloading dies might just be a good idea too. |
Eh if it really came down to a major purge and i had to get by with bare minmum
out of my stuff 1 Bushmaster 16" flatop w ACOG and M4-2000 supprssor 10/22 T with tac lite barrel and suppressor P22 Rem 870 is a 20in rifle site remchoke gun ( I have tons of tubes pattermaster , rifled etc) Glock 19 Rem 700 308 scout rifle that would be it I could probably lose the rem 700 as the AR or the 870 would work in a pinch for a deer gun |
