I was watching Man on Fire today and I couldn't stop thinking about in that situation at the end when Creasy trades himself for the girl, why wouldn't he have a sniper set up to take out the BGs once the girl is safe.

The situation is as follows:

400 yards away
8 Badguys, a few with rifles
Two cars they have for cover
BGs need to be put down quickly to cover your guy

What do you use?

I'm thinking SR25 with a nightforce scope and some good BlackHills ammo.

In the scenario posted it is highly improbable that one sniper....no matter how good even with a semi auto could take out 8 bad guys, especially if they have concealment in the form of autos, before one of those bad guys could shoot one or more good guys.

You would need more than one sniper preferably at least 4.

What, you didn't like the ending?

My answer is M25.

M-82 so it would not matter they were in cars
glass and sheetmetal can do weird things to 308

He wasn't exactly in friendly territory with a lot of support; hell, he had to shove explosives up some dude's ass to get answers to some questions, it'd take a miracle to get sniper support.

True in a sense it would be suicide but its just you.  What do you do go out even further and high tail it after creating a diversion?

I was thinking .50 at first but it would be hard to suppress and conceal your location, correct?

400 yards will bleach the sound out quite well.

He was already dead. He didn't care about himself. He only cared about the girl and he knew that she had a better shot at not being a victim again if he held up his side of the bargain.

yeah, a sniper ending would have been cool, but Creasy had to keep his word as the "Voice" or whatever the heck it was kept his. plus he was dying anyways.

ETA: beat by 3 seconds.

Not all endings are prefectly happy. That one was pretty good, the girl got to go free, and he died before he was tortured to death.

He was already dying from the attack when the girl was kidnapped.  That's the point, he had no intention of living.  The badguy met his end by means of point blank handgun fire in the end anyways.

My answer would be the .408 Chey-Tac or the Accuracy International AS 50.  Either would do the Job.  Also you are not dealing with professional soldiers here, just with petty thugs.  If you has a good position you could dispatch the badguys without taking fire yourself.  Especially in a movie

A trued Rem 700 with a 28" + Lilja w/ brake in  338 RUM would be my choice....and it's my next project

Yeah, I remember seeing one.  I don't know who made it, or whether it was in development or not.

Looked pretty badass

Nope that's the one that goes down.

In this scenerio, 8 @ 400 w/ protected subject near perps- I'd be comfortable w/ a good scoped semi in .308 to 50bmg.  The idea isn't that all 8 perps would be killed but that you could cover so that the protected subject could exit the area while the killing and mayhem ensued.

AR10/SR25 -- with suppressor.  I know it's not Hollywood silent, but at a quarter mile, ithe sound is disguised enough that a few people would be down before anybody figured out there was somebody shooting.

Hathcock could have done it with a .22 and a slingshot.
