I was shooting a while back. I guess some guy at the range was insecure about the fact we were shooting ar15 and he didn't have any. He said something to us like "no body better break into my house" and then proceeded to list all the guns he had. One gun on his list was a "sawed off shotgun." In our presence was an LEO. When the guy left we all went.

The guy considers himself very knowledgeable on firearms. He told me he has been shooting longer than I have been alive (I'm 25 he's over 50) when I disagreed with him on an issue.

Usually a shotgun with a barrel under 18 inches but I've heard people call a shotgun that they cut a long hunting barrel down to legal length called a sawed off shotgun. It is almost always a shotgun that was cut down by a person and not a gunsmith. I've seen a lot of grouse guns referred to as sawed off shotguns that were just cheap single shots cut down to 18-22 inches.

I think historically it means when a barrel is cut to the length of the feed tube, whatever length that may be.

I have an 870 with a 3 shot extension and I "sawed off" the barrel at 21 inches.

So....he's just been wrong for longer than you've been alive, too.

Short barrel, stock cut off, "pistol grip" shaped with a file, usually some sort of tape holding something on. Maybe even some witty saying carved into the wood. ie; "attitude adjustment tool" or "widow maker"...

To me, it implies a cheap SxS, with the buttstock and barrel sawed off, usually to NFA-illegal size...

A proper, factory-made AOW or SBS is not a 'sawed off shotgun'....

That's how I see it.

Short barreled shotguns are not available over here, I think shotguns need to have 24" barrels.

When I think of a 'sawn-off' or 'sawed-off' I think of the ones used in Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. That and other movies/games.

Pretty much this.  A home cut-down job on the BBL or stock, or both.

A shotgun BBL that is under 18" and is title 2 I consider a "Short Barreled Shotgun".  This included NFA legal home cut down jobs.

I guess "sawed off" to me indicates illegal or improper, or both.

A slang term used to describe any shot gun whose barrel has been cut illegally to a length shorter than the arbitrary minimum set by statute, regardless of modifications to the stock.

I have an H&R single shot 12 gauge that I took a hack saw to. I took it from a 32" barrel to a 18.5".

Seeing that I sawed off the barrel, I figure it can safely be called a sawed off.

ETA: With 3" magnums it hurts like a motherfucker.

"Sawed off" to me means someone took a hacksaw to it.  To me it does not necessarily infer that it is too short.

In the old days, all hunting shotguns had barrels that were 30" or 32" long. Anything shorter than that was considered to be "sawed off". That didn't mean the barrels were less than 18", only that they weren't 30" or 32".

There is a reason (other than crime or concealment) some longer barreled weapons are *sawdoff*.

Some perty stack barrels.

Do people not know about NFA law?

In three seperate occassions I've had someone brag to me about how short the barrel was on their shotgun. All three cases sounded like they were not over 18 inches and we can't have title II weapons in NY state. These people were not thugs or criminals. I informed them about the National Firearms Act and the penalties. All three then got real concerned and asked how to properly measure a barrel.

Some people (And quite a few here) believe that while a long barrel
shotgun loaded with 00Buck merely sprays out 9 pea sized pellets, sawing
the barrel off somehow multiplies the power and shot charge
exponentially and enables one to knock people 10 feet backwards and blow
holes in walls big enough to stick their head in and look around.

I mean hey! They couldn't put it in the movie if it wasn't true!

What I never figured out was exactly where the cut off point was between a regular shotgun and a "sawed off" Nuclear meat grinder from Hell!

Usually it means that the choke has been cut off the barrel since removable chokes are modern invention. If you're going to cut off the choke you might as well cut the barrel shorter so it fits under your jacket.

No, they don't.  I have people tell me all the time that MGs and suppressors are illegal, and that is here in Indiana (SBSs are illegal).

When I tell them they simply have to send the appropriate paperwork and $200 to the ATF, they ask me how they can buy a MG.  Then I have to disappoint them by informing them of what happened with FOPA and prices since then.
