For food that you cooked: If you would be proud to serve it to your wife or GF. I mean excited like you can't wait for them to eat it kind of proud, then you can call it gourmet.
Wearing the funny mushroom lookin' hat is optional

1) A sprig of parsley. Dunno why, but a garni elevates "common" foods somehow.

2) A decorative drizzle of sauce. Ever see the fancy food shows? They have just a little dribble of flavored sauce that they zigzag over the entree (main eats).

Of course, we just slop gravy on it and call it dinner. That's why we can't eat at the surrender monkey restaurants anymore.

3) A side dish (usually veggie) made (presented, bitch! ) in an extra ornate fashion. All you got is taters? Dye 'em purple and run 'em through a potato peeler - twist the coils of potato into a flower. Presto.

Or get some egg roll / won ton wrappers, insert pureed rutabaga and quick fry. Weird = Gourmet.

When my wife is watching me taste something she made while she's holding a frying pan over my head. = "Damn that's good, sweetheart!!! I'd like seconds please."

I've found that most people don't usually get as "excited" as I do
about a really good dish that happened to come together correctly
semms like they don't appreciate the subtleties of the flavors.....

I don't wear the hat

It's likely to be something normal people wouldn't eat, like fried yak dick, or boiled moose balls.

Do you know what She did during WW2?
You would be very surprised if you didn't already know about what She did before being known as someone that cooks meals on TV.
