Nominate a "last country standing" candidate for a poll.

Churning dirt doesn't count. 1st or 2nd world nominees.

I'll disagree with that one. Country is huge but essential services and population are really concentrated. Those first couple nukes will take out a lot of important stuff that can't be compensated for by the open spaces.

I'd say the US or China. Big in terms of area and numerous separate population centers.

Pick any random sub-Saharan African country, nuke the living hell out of it, and in 5 years it would look exactly the same as before you started.

As far as 1st world countries, the US could probably absorb the most nukes before collapsing into a Mad Max situation. There is still a lot of cold war era redundancy built into our communications, banking, and electric grid that most people are unaware exists. We could literally lose several major cities and carry on close to business as usual after the panic and dust subsided.

In terms of nuclear powers Russia has the most empty space to nuke but they also have their population fairly grouped together in the western part of the country so I guess it depends on how the nukes are targeted

Probably India or China.

The United States would collapse pretty quickly from social unrest if a couple cities were hit.

(People would flee the cities in droves going… where? Then our own people burn our partially deserted cities down. Government checks stop coming, drug addicts can’t get their fix at the pharmacy. People can’t get medicine. The whole country would collapse in short order.)

I agree.

If the US got merely the equivalent of 1945 era tech bombs like "Little Boy"/Hiroshima on NYC and "Fat Man"/Nagasaki on Los Angeles?

The US social cohesion level right now barely registers.

A couple weeks in Taiwan and connections in Hong Kong...

Taiwan is more developed than mainland China and in Taiwan, there are areas far more modern that anyplace else I've ever seen, and there are areas that are very backward and remind me of how one would have lived about the time when the first tendrils of electricity came to the USA.

Depends on where they land. You could probably collapse the US with 6 nukes in the right places. For sure with a dozen.

Generally those are targeted at population centers.  Places like Chicago or New York or Los Angeles.

Absorbing a few nuclear detonations might actually improve the United States of America.

Before economic collapse?

Well considering they have literally no resources aside from coal, concrete, and meth, and not much going on in inhabited population hub, I'd say North Korea could probably hold out better than any given modernized country. They're already at zero.

When you the Choson Rodongdang and new sanctions get thrown down

Maybe you could narrow it down.  Who would last longer hypothetically...

Russia with Moscow nuked
or
China with Beijing nuked?

The USA would last longer, we have pretty robust government at the state level that could step in and fill the Washington .Fed void.

There are still amazingly rural areas in both Russia and China where it would be awhile before anything short of being blown up or irradiated would matter too much. There was a documentary here in Russian about some russian town out in the wilderness, it seemed like living in Alaska in the early 20th century.

I imagine parts of Russia are nearly at A Young Doctor's Notebook levels still, and wouldn't care.

China has enough internal tensions that it would, IMHO, go all 1920's warlord era if Beijing was taken out.

No way. We have over 20 cities with one million+ populations, and over 50 with 500,000 plus. Our population is much more evenly distributed compared to a lot of countries like Russia or China.

Also, one aspect of centrally planned economies (China and Russia again) is that they like to build one giant factory or focal point for all of the shit they do, i.e., for a long time in the USSR there was only one (one!) fucking ginormous factory that made batteries... In America, we have a lot of smaller factories and control centers for stuff like communications and production.

Also, we have more miles of paved roads than anywhere else in the world, so it would be relatively easy to start from scratch in an unscathed area, say, Bumfuck, Nebraska that is right next to I-80.
