I was walking the dog with one of my sons this morning, and he picked this bullet out of the gutter.  It has some numbers on the base, but I can't read them.

Here is a picture of the bullet, next to a round of 30-06 ball on the left.

What is it?

My son says "Thanks!"

Red X Improved.

Looks like 7.62x54R.

it's the dreaded "red ex" cartridge, outlawed about the same time black talons were outlawed.

Looks like it has too much neck for .303.

I'd put my money on 7.62x54R

Edit:
Here's a pic Google found for me:

As A child I picked up a rond from 3 inches of water on the shore of the lake we were fishing in....my father smacked my hand and told me...never pick up un-fired ammo out in the wild...bad things may happen....

we reload or buy our ammo....

Thanks guys, it definately looks like Tolop's pic of the 7.62x54R.

BURN, I didn't smack my kid when he pick the round up, but he is leaning over my shoulder right now; do you think I should still smack him?

I picked up a 12ga shell unfired at the state game area, and I tossed it into my car

Let no round go unfired
