I tried this in the AK forum and got only 1 response. Maybe GD can help me out.

Let me know what you all think about them and if they are worth it for a price substantially lower than what people on gunbroker are asking.  I've never shot one before but they sound pretty fun.

I love shooting mine- once it's zeroed at a set distance.

I think the scope is fucked though. What a PITA to deal with.

Also, mine only feeds ball (but does it reliably). I have some soft tips I bought for a Mosin- they jam every time.

The bench accuracy is crap compared to my Winchester 70, but it is FUN to shoot.

All that said, I'm no expert on the bloc weapons... really don't know much about them at all. But the PSL always draws attention, and was worth the 550 I paid.

If anyone knows of a better optics solution... I am all ears. This offset foreign language POS wastes shitloads of ammo every time.

If it's dirt cheap they are kinda fun to shoot as a beater

My impressions:

Optics were meh, picky about ammo (alot of which is corrosive or smells terrible) , same old same old com bloc construction and just over all meh.

Great DMR rifle. Light, accurate (try handloads vs surpllus shit), and the stock optic is great once zeroed.

They look cool and are fun to shoot.  Accuracy isn't horrible ... but not great either.

I think I paid $ 550-575 for mine with a full kit ... (4) mags, belt, sling ... etc.

I've run Russian and Czech 147g, and Yugo 182g through it without a problem.
7.62x54r  was  dirt cheap a few years ago, is it out-of-control like everything else ?

ETA: I'll see if I can find the slow-mo video of the barrel whiplash ....

PSL whip
I don't think this was the one I was thinking of, I thought it was a closer
video shot of just the barrel.

ETA2:  Holy sheete !   $1k now !

innunaccurate lead lobbers, thats what they are. Mine was one of the first batch imported and had the original scope with the radioactive tritium shit.

dont sit on the right side of one at the range , it shoots brass pretty damn hard and more accuratley that the bullets

I agree. They were a good buy at 550. Not worth what they cost now.

Mine is a factory early one, and in the PSL crapshoot I got a decent one.  Some report terrible accuracy.

Frankly,  your money is better spend elsewhere unless you are really into combloc stuff, like I was in the late 90s.  Now? Give me an AR10 any day.

This is the best group I ever shot with it by far, and could never repeat it.  It's 1 group of 10, not 2 of 5 like you might think based on the pattern.  This was using the 148gr wolf ammo that was available about 10 years ago.

I'd drop cash on a Vepr before getting an over priced PSL.

They're a lot of fun, I think. Surplus ammo is still cheap if you don't mind the extra cleaning, and mine gets great accuracy with handloads. The scope is a PINA, but it's the only way to go IMO. There's tons of other rifles that are more accurate, more comfortable to shoot, and have better optics options. Only get a PSL if you really want a PSL in all its rough around the edges glory.

I'm glad I got mine when AIM had them for $540. One of the ones the sent me came with an unusual scope.

I get about 2'' on avg with wolf light ball. THe bare heats up rather quick and will string your shots all over the place. The best groupings are done slow fire its not a sniper rifle anyway so dont expect sub moa groups or anything. I like mine alot.

I have had one for almost two years now.  It took a year of one and off tinkering to get it working reliably.  And that wit only three of my six magazines.  Mags can be a huge issue with some of these.   There is a reason why they originally came with 4 mags that were custom fitted to the rifle.   The serial number on the mag denote4s the rifle is is supposed to mount in.

All that aside it us a fun rifle to shoot.  Mine is reasonably accurate.   As the barrel heats up the groups grow, but if you subscribe to the one shot one kill train of thought it is pretty good at what it was designed to do.

BTW:  When you remove the scope it's cool factor seems to drop by about 95%.

I thought I wanted one until I actually handled one.........what a POS. I have only seen that one though, so maybe it was a lemon? I have heard a lot of bad about them though.

Sounds about what I expected. I heard you should only shoot light ball out of them. Heavy ball can take its toll on the rifle?

Same, or a Saiga in .308. I've been pleased with my saiga's in x39. Shooting US commercial ammo gave really nice accuracy, given the platform. I'd bet shooting .308 factory ammo in a Vepr or Saiga would be superior to a PSL shooting 54R (given the price of PSL's lately it's a fair comparison).

The PSL's look really cool, but I'd want something more accurate/repeatable for a DMR type rifle.

Yeah, light ball ammo is what I've read. I recall hearing reports of damaged rear trunnions and top covers blowing off after too much heavy stuff.

Mine is as accurate as any of my other AKs with surplus soviet light ball, I've never been a fan of optics so I have only shot mine with irons.

The new 7.62x54R VEPR is the bee's knees now.  Very nice guns, well made, and accurate.

for the cost of the ammo, its a hoot to shoot.  dont expect it to be something it wasnt ment to be (sub moa rifle)

I purchased a POS from AIM about two years ago.  When I received it the front sight was canted to the right almost 20* and the flash hider was not straight.  I sent it back and received a second POS that would not cycle properly.  Sent that one back and got my money back.  Not saying that there are not good ones out there but what are the odds of receiving two POS's in a row?

The PSL is very fun to shoot.

It sometimes can produce some pretty wicked awesome muzzle flashes, and it launches brass into the next zip code.

The price of ammo is a huge plus, too. The cost of entry seems to be a downside these days.

It gets a lot of reactions at the range, too. Of those who comment, I'd say it's 50% "what kind of gun is that," 40% "_____ Dragunov _____," and 10% other.

This

And it is a soft shooter, Mags are a little $$ right now

Been covered pretty well in this thread.

I'll just echo that they aren't tack drivers, start with Mags when trouble shooting feed and ejection issues, don't shoot it fast (I bought mine to use in Heavy Metal 3 gun matches, which I know it will never do) and yeah, the scope is a PITA to zero.

But, yeah, they are a very non-PC rifle to take to the range and start conversations about.  They are fun to shoot, recoil isn't as bad as it looks and sounds.  One of these days I will eventually work up some handloads for it to see if I can get the accuracy to something better than minute of barn.

They are a very fun gun. How can anyone say that x54R in a semi isn't fun?

This beats a PSL hands down.
