Besides the usual high prices, ridiculous transfer fees, terrible service, etc. what are your issues with most local gun shops? And on the flipside what do you like about your LGS if you like them?
21 years ago I took in a 1911A1 to have my LGS solder in a custom front sight. I finally picked the weapon up about 9 months later...their shithead smith still hadn't finished it.
I still haven't been back in, and it's the closest, largest shop close to me. Fuck Duncan's. |
I've found that most gunshop employees would rather stand around and talk to "the regulars" than ask people that want to buy something if they need any help.
We have one that charges a transfer fee for in stock guns. Fuck them, i havent been back since i found out.
Only tactical guns...no bolt guns or single shot guns
Their transfer fees are high but my buddy has his FFL and gives me free transfers Ass-rape ammo prices ($18 for 50 rd of brass 9mm, $0.50/rd 5.56) They are usually willing to show me whatever I want to look at, so thats a plus. |
They're open the same hours as my job, so it can be tricky for me to get there some times. Haven't been in for almost a month, but I did see the owner when I was out to eat Sunday.
We have one that won't do a transfer if they have anything comparable in stock. They won't transfer ANY lowers because they have one single AR type rifle on the wall.
3 closest to me are all good to go. Good service, decent prices. I will say I have bought at least half my guns from Academy sports store in town.
That my dad owns it, and I don't get more firearms as presents
I never have a problem. I know what I want, I go in and get it and I leave.

I really have no complaints about my ffl.
I understand they cant really match online prices but their used prices are pretty good. They do transfers for free and have a decent layaway program which I use in between my transfers so that they still get something out of the deal and I get another gun. Ive bought 6 or 7 guns now from them either by making payments until I transferred something or just buying something outright when I picked a transfer up. They are also a fairly new pawn shop so the store is pretty nice and clean. Ive also bought a computer, tools, video games for my son, my Wedding band which was new. Hell I never would have went in there if someone hadnt told me about the free transfers. Id say I have made it worth their time in the past year. |

my lgs is awesome.
all vets, very engaging. great prices. no assholes, willing to tell you anything you want to know, excellent selection, 25 buck transfers. 07 sot ffl. highlander arms, spofford NH.https://www.facebook.com/pages/Highlander-Arms/320564717970249 |

My LGS in Hawaii is awesome, will often match online prices if not beat them. Remington 00 buck or High Velocity on sale form them is $175 for a case of $250.
Got me a Speedfeed stock on my 590a1 for no extra cost me. Very nice inside, very professional and don't (at least I haven't) have the typical gun store attitude I see mentioned here. All around awesome shop sans shit parking and not in the best area in the world. Believe a few of them are in the reserves. Oh an ffl fee's are too much t $40 for divvy or $25 for active .mil |

I hadn't been in a gun store that I didn't know the owners personally for many years until tonight. Stopped at the one in town this evening and was greeted by the owner with "good evening sir, how can I help you? Me: "I would like to order a firearm from Buds and I see your FFL is on file with them". "Yes, we do a lot of business with Buds, just order what you want and they will ship here." Me: "How much do you charge for transfers? " Owner: "$10." I said thank you and went home and placed my order.

I don't have a gunshop within 60 miles of my home. But the ones that are 70 miles away are very nice!

Most are OK (discounting the "why pay less" Gander Mtn store) but there is one where the owner is a total dick.
That cock sucker even hovers over you when you are filling out the 4473 making sure you put a X in each box, and that you do not go outside the lines of the box. In fact that was the cause of my final trip there. On the second page where you sign and date the 4473 I made the "grievous error" of not putting the whole year down (1/1/14 instead of 1/1/2014) and the fucker went off on me. I'm talking spittle out the mouth/stroke-out going off. I just looked at him like he was crazy, balled-up the 4473, told him in terms that would not pass for flowers to go fuck himself, and walked out. That cost him a $800.00+ sale and any future sales he may have made off me. Anytime someone asks about that shop I tell them that he has a good inventory, prices are MSRP or higher, and that the owner is a flat out dick in every respect you can think of and recommend that they shop elsewhere so as to not put money in his pocket. |
They gave Morgan Spurlock and CNN a platform to spew anti gun bullshit
Well, my preferred LGS carries a lot of inventory and has pretty damn good prices. Thus them bastards make my wallet cry every time I walk through the door.

When I got my Sig 716 transferred last year, the guy behind the counter casually mentioned to me that they had this same model in stock. I guess he didn't know I paid 1500 bucks for mine NIB off Gunbroker, while the one they were selling was MSRP. |

Local shop I have bought a bunch of guns and stuff from is now run by foul talking thugs. You can`t take a lady in with you.
Theres no knowing what kind of language and attitude will come out of the back of the shop. I`ll spend money somewhere else. And that`ll be the small shop run by a disabled vet about 20 miles from here. He`ll share knowledge, tell you how to save money, and do $20 transfers. The gunsmith is skilled and polite, not a smart ass know it all, consignments are easy and the place is pleasant to visit. Dixie Triggers, outta Springfield. Decent people who know shooting and shooters. picky Ol Scruff |

View Quote Same with mine, won't transfer anything he has in stock or can order from his distributor and charge you $100 over the going rate. Nicest, friendliest guys in the world, but I never buy anything except the odd box of ammo that I need right now. |
Cheap Chinese junk on good AR's. Uninformed buyers eat it up like candy. I've told my gun shop to stop selling that shit and sell good stuff!! It has fell on deaf ears.
Owner is a complete dickwad to his employees and half of his customers. Employees are lying douches. Can't believe they are still in business.
Not enough used guns. Profit margins on them should be higher and they're a lot more interesting.
None of my locally owned places have any guns with wood furniture. It's black plastic as far as the eye can see.
My taste in guns may be shifting. |
I had one here in San Antonio back in 2008 or so told me that their transfers were $75 for any gun purchased online and that since they sold AR-15's that per store policy they would not transfer AR-15's and stripped lowers. They had a few AR's on the wall and one was a basic Bushmaster Carbine with a 1/9"16" barrel and it was $1,600. Guy told me if I wanted an AR that this was the best there was, but I could only shoot 55gr .223 out of it. If I wanted to shoot 5.56mm I needed 1/7 M-4 profile barrel that they could install for me for $400. I asked if that was the best AR on the market then why would it need a new barrel? He had no answer for me. I looked at him like laughed and walked out.
Gun shop guy was a fuckin' tard. |

I like how over 90% of the long guns are on the sales floor readily able to be fondled.
Dislike how busy they are. I won't go on a Friday or Saturday. |
I have to drive if I want deals either 100 miles north or south
The gun store near me is huge, they pretty much always have whatever handgun I want in stock. I love going there and handling the gun and then gawking at their price and getting it transferred to my other FFL friend for $20
Their prices are high, but I get a frequent customer discount. Bad thing is only two of the workers give me the discount.
I buy almost all of my powder and primers there. |

This Hey, all you guys who cry about the "regulars".....ever thought of becoming a "regular"? Maybe instead of spending a week on the interwebs trying to save $3 you could build a relationship at your LGS and help a local business?? Just a thought |
