Went to buy a few 2x4x10's and 2x4x8's.
The 2x4x10's were just that. The 2x4x8's we listed as 2x4x93 and 2x4x102 or something like that. Why not list them as just 2x4x8? Whats the last number, inches??

Yes. Or you could have done like the guy that went in and asked for 2x4's. The lumberyard guy asked "How long do you need them?" And the guy answered "Quite a while, I'm building a garage." |

 I just bought the bigger numbered ones. I figured if it length, well my wife always says it cant be too long and if its a quality rating, well my wife says it cant ever be too good either so....  Why the hell dont they list it in feet?? Why not just a simple 2x4x8, 2x4x10 and 2x4x12??

Studs are 92 5/8, I bet those 93s are actually 92 5/8s if you measure them. They make this distinction because when you want to buy studs, you don't want to have to trim a few inches off each of them to make them work; a true 8 footer is too long. |

Ahh, ok. Why is a stud 92 5/8 instead of 8 foot?

There's a long history, but basically a stud is the length it is because once you put all the necessary crap below and above it, it'll bring a wall up to 'standard' height. It's mostly about consistency for the builder, don't mess with a good thing etc. |

when building a wall you one stud and one board across the top and bottom.
93"+1.5"+1.5"=96" so it is the same length of a 4ftx8ft sheet of plywood. |

Correct. Don't forget about 104 5/8 studs for nine foot walls. As far as grades, most places will have STD & Btr, #2, #3. Most studs will be rated STD & Btr. For longer stuff, #2 is the way to go as it should have at least 2 non-barked edges and fewer knots. #3 is just plain nasty.
Sorry for the lengthy explaination. Hope everything is clear. I guess this kind of stuff is becoming my cup of tea after 7 1/2 years in the business.

Strange, my local Home Depot has them on the lumber racks as 2x4x8, 2x4x10 and 2x4x12.
EDIT: I thought this thread was going to be about the differances between 'premium' grade, superior grade, excellente! grade and all the other wood grades that sound pretty good but some of the good sounding grades are actually two feet by four feet of knots. |
