Just one reason why I haven't been inside a record store in at least 10 years. |

Not a Willie fan, but did you ever remember the name of the country band that had a whole cd about bootlegging? |

Unfortunately. If you're interested, the root menu has them sorted by genre... Billboard Singles Charts |

"Run Nigger Run" by Uncle Dave Macon.
And before the board PC police edit my comical suggestion let me give some info on this song. Uncle Dave Macon was a Bluegrass and Folk singer from the 20's and 30's. The song "Run Nigger Run" is a verson of an old slave song from the days of the civil war. It was sung by slaves to warn other slaves about the Pattyroller. The Pattyroller was bands of southerners who would go out and hun run away slaves. There is your history lesson for Blacks in American Music for the day, go get a copy of the song. It is an interesting part of Southern History. ![]() |

I can't stand 99% of what's out there today but Maroon5's "Songs about Jane" just flat-out kicks ass!
"This Love" was the first big single and "she will be loved" is popular now. Most of what I've seen describe them as funk and rock but not funk-rock. I've also seen them described as neo-soul whatever that is. Most of the album is on the softer side and most of the songs compel me to sing along. TANGLED I'm full of regret For all the things that I have done and said And I don't know if it'll ever be ok to show My face around here Sometimes I wonder if I disappear Would you ever turn your head and look See if I'm gone Cause I fear There is nothing to say to you That you wanna hear That you wanna know I think I should go The things I've done are way too shameful You're just an innocent A helpless victim of a spiders web And I'm an insect Going after anything that I can get So you better turn your head and run and don't look back Cause I fear There is nothing to say to you That you wanna hear That you wanna know I think I should go The things I've done are way too shameful And I've done you so wrong Treated you bad Strung you along Oh, shame on myself I don't know how I got so tangled up You better turn your head and look See if I'm gone Cause I fear There is nothing to say to you That you wanna hear That you wanna know I think I should go The things I've done are way too shameful And I've done you so wrong Treated you bad Strung you along Oh, shame on myself I don't know how I got so tangled up (tangled!) [And I've done you so wrong Treated you bad Strung you along Oh, shame on myself I don't know how I got so tangled up] |

No no, I like some hip hop, listen to a bunch of underground stuff and have "Tilt your head back" with Nelly and Christina on one cd, but I'm just shocked by how popular its become. |

And not even GOOD Hip-Hop at that. The wholesale takeover of the charts by Hip-Hop/Urban really happened around 2001, and it's been that way ever since. I've been DJing again, and I was reviewing the charts from 1975 on to make sure I wasn't missing anything too important out of my music collection. It turns out that I knew (and in most cases already owned) every song until around '98, when there started to be songs on the year's Top 100 that I've *still* never heard. Even worse, I only had about 5 songs in 2001 and 2002, and only KNEW maybe 15 out of the 100 during those years. I admit that things improved a bit in 2003, but there is a HUGE gap between the Rock and Hip-Hop audience starting around 2000 that, as a DJ, I have to know the audience, because there is almost NO cross-over. In the 80s and early 90s, the Top 100 charts were a mix of rock, modern rock, hip-hop, and pop, but nearly everyone knew all of the songs, even if they didn't necessarily *like* them. These days, neither of the divided audiences have any idea what's going on in the other. This year's few crossover hits are: Franz Ferdinand - Take Me Out Modest Mouse - Float On The Killers - Somebody Told Me Audioslave - Like A Stone Hoobastank - The Reason Lyrics Born - Callin' Out Black Eyed Peas - Where Is The Love? Eminem - Just Lose It Of these, more than half are established groups. Even Britney, Christina, and Pink haven't done all that well with their recent albums. Only Avril Lavine has gotten a lot of airplay out of the young female pop stars, and remember how big of a marketing push they get. And even Hip-Hop's biggest new star (and one of the few with crossover), 50 Cent, hasn't done too much this year. A lot of this can be blamed on the consolidations of both the record companies and radio. There used to be two dozen large labels, with 8 majors. We now have 4 huge companies that own everything but very tiny independents. And they have focused on spending more money on fewer, bigger acts, and have dropped a lot of talented smaller acts, especially those that sound different than the few specific "mainstream" sounds. And ALL the majors are pushing Hip-Hop HARD, because it's cheap to make and promote. Then there is radio. In particular, Clear Channel. CC owns nearly half of all radio stations, and they come in and fire all the local talent and pipe in programming from their central programmers in Texas. They've also been flipping lots of stations to Spanish Language, because of the ever-growning population of Spanish-Only speakers. They are utterly despised EVERYWHERE they go, both by the communities and of course by the staffs they take over. Their main competitor is Infinity Broadcasting, who is the lessor evil. While they do some of the same things, they treat the locals much better and allow stations to have more control over their playlists and identities. There are very few independant stations anymore, and that's *really* hurt things, because it's traditionally been independants that have filtered out a lot of the crap (much of it major-label crap) and found the gems. Those days are largely over, outside of college radio, which itself is feeling a lot of the same pressure. The labels blame all this on the Internet, but most of it they've brought on themselves via their management practices. -Troy |

What? I thought everyone into punk rock and hardcore also dug old country and bluegrass. ![]() As far as new popular music? Don't listen to much. Nickel Back did a badass cover of "Saturday Nights All Right For Fighting" though. Ever heard any Me First And The Gimme Gimmes? Not exactly "popular music", but good stuff. Basicly members of NOFX, Swinging Utters, and Foo Fighters. And an all cover band. They do awesome covers of many popular 60's, 70s, and 80's hits. As well as one CD of Broadway tunes. BTW, I especially enjoy their renditions of "Nothing Compares To You", "Me and Julio Down By The School Yard", and Seal's "Crazy" are among my personal faves. ![]() |

John Kerry's new hit.. "I'M SLINGIN MORE SHIT THAN A JOHN DEERE MANURE SPREADER"
|
|
Downloading "Me First and Gimme Gimmes" right now. As for old country I love it, everyday at work Johnny Cash, Johnny Horton and Merle Haggard come along with me, plus some rockabilly (Reverand Horton Heat and Hillbilly Hellcats). Not interested in new country though, I don't wanna hear about how some guy loves his new truck and beer, I wanna hear about a man building a Cadillac peice by peice with stolen parts ![]() |

omg, i dloaded it also, what trash. |
||
|
I'll drink that my friend, HATE that new country. ![]() BTW, had you heard about Me First And The Gimme Gimmes before? Just curious, as I'm wondering if they are one of those bands that have flown under the radar. |

I never heard of the "Me First and the Gimme Gimmes" before, but I've been out of the scene since Hatebreed went on MTV (Its crazy to think they used to be nothing but a local band here). The "Walking on Sunshine" cover is alright, I gotta download some more from "Me first" |

Here. You'll never hear it on the radio. Because radio music sucks.

He should have kept getting someone else to sing his songs.... ETA: I dont like rap/hip hop whatever the hell it is but, there was a cover song done by one of these groups of the song "Bombs over Baghdad"....Anyone know what group it was. It was pretty good. It had a little bit of a metal sounding edge to it. Kinda like half rock/half rap |

|
Or P.O.D.'s song "Alive" |

|
"The "Walking on Sunshine" cover is alright"
Actually, I know which song you are talking about, and I'm pretty sure that's not Me First And The Gimme Gimmes. I think the file was misnamed. Hope you found some other stuff by them, because it is MUCh better than that song. ![]() |
|
Yea, it was definantly mislabeled, I downloaded "Rocket Man" and its a whole lot different from the walking on sunshine song. They actually made an Elton John song sound good. |
